Always one to vote for Terry Pratchett here - try the series about Tiffany that starts with 'The Wee Free Men' or The standalone book 'The Amazing Maurice And His Educated Rodents.'
More votes for Michael Morpurgo and Derek Landy's Skullduggery Pleasant books. Also Garth Nix - my favourite was Sabriel. Umm. Philip Pullman?
Judy Bloom's stuff for younger kids is good but a bit American. 'Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing' was one but check before you buy as she covers a wide age range, dunno if she's even in shops anymore though
Paula Danziger
Malorie Blackman
Susan Cooper
Alan Garner
(Trying to remember what I read as a kid!)
Hope that's a few more ideas, many are fantasy though so if she prefers another genre I can have a bit more of a think
