Claiming unused plot of land as your own ?

Anyone know the legal way to do this ? Can you just put up a sign saying unless contested within the next ten years , this plot will be owned by myself ?

I've been trying to follow guidance like this but it's a bit confusing. Or can someone pinpoint a department at the council I can ask ?

At most I'd probably use the space as off road parking and fence it off.

Atm, the areas just used as a fly tipping space , with a derelict shed on.

Fence it off, use it as yours and then if nobody objects after so many years it is yours, I think.
Putting a sigh up would be asking the trouble.
Asking the council might be futile.

Well there was a discussion a few months about it between the neighbours, think we even got the council involved trying to chase the owners to clear it but they couldn't care less. No one knows who actually owns it , it's been unused since I moved in , and that was 2013, now all that's happening to it is people are using it as a dumping ground and throwing bits of crap on it. Wouldn't care if the owners actually used the land or maintained it, but this is literally round the corner from my house so degrades the area.

I think that's a brilliant idea if you can do it. Maybe turn it into allotments with the neighbours rather than car parking, or a wildflower meadow. Good luck.

A bloke we know had some land next to his garden on Wildwood. He said he was paying £10 a year to the council ( a few years ago) to rent it off them, fenced it all off etc and now has a nice garden at the side of his house.
I no longer live around there though , or would have popped around and asked him how he went about it for you

Nobody owns the land

The Monarch of the day owns all the land ( Crown Estate )

We are mere freeholders, tenants, or licensed

Unless we remove the monarchy by force

Treason to be Cheerful

There is an act called ad else possession.

If you maintain a piece of land for 10 years if it is unregistered ie not previously been bought and sold. You then write to the land registry with evidence stating that you are taking ownership of the land. If they do not respond within 2 weeks it’s yours.

If the land is registered you have to maintain the land for 12 years. Princess is the same but rather than contacting the land registry you write to the owner of the land.
