"Darts and Crafts" New Business

Opening on Monday 7th September next door to Phoenix Music on Gaol Road.

I don't know what the crafts side will be like but there seem to be an awful lot
of darts and associated bits hanging off the wall. I'm told that there are 80 darts
teams in Stafford and the nearest place to buy them (darts that is) is Stoke.

So, good luck to them, I hope they do well.

Fantastic!

I need some new stems and flights...and beats having to drive up to stoke.

Hope they succeed with both sides of the store :)

Small local business's can not compete with the internet only business's who have much lower overheads and a lot of local people don't care.

Most new small business's fail and the owners usually lose loads of money.

The problem with most people is that it is so easy to shop on line where all they have to do is press a button no wonder shops close then people moan about empty shops being everywhere so who's the hypocrites local business need support

Specialist shops can suplament their trade through the internet/ebay and can reach out to all areas of the country.

By adding their address in their ebay listing also generates awareness.

I wish them luck, but am I the only relic here who immediately thinks of Benny Hill and his 'Arts & Farces' sketches?

I use shops that sell what i need. I dont need arts or darts, its hardly fair to call people hypocrites. Most people wont go and buy something they dont need just to support a local business. Its not rocket science. Its simple economics, supply and demand, if a business isnt supplying what people want people wont use it. Thats why a lot of small local businesses dont succeed, not because its cheaper on the net. Stafford is a relativley small town and niche shops dont do too well unfortunatley.

@Steve w

You only opened (according to this thread) on 7th Sept and then approx 3 weeks later you wonder where the support is?

I only heard about this shop when I read it here on the forum.

Might I ask about how much market research that you did before opening the shop?

Also, I would imagine that when opening a new shop, one would take into account financially the considerable but neccessary cost of advertising?

You cant just expect people to know that you are there.

Where and how are you promoting the shop?

I have not previously seen anything anywhere, in any local newspaper, about your shop.

Stafford Newsletter would probably love to feature an article about something difererent like this.

so my TOP TIP would be...

If you want people to come into your shop, when you come on to a forum, or any type of social media...its a REALLY GOOD IDEA to be upbeat, positive, and friendly.

Perhaps not a good idea to call people hypocrites, although I notice that you did apologise for that.

I also agree with others who say that you could increase sales by selling online as well as in your shop.

Having said all this, I do hope that your business is a success, its good to see independant shops in the town.

I just need to make plain that I have not posted anything on the forum until today.
I haven't called anybody anything, so actually, the apologies are not mine. I didn't do anything.
I am more than capable of doing my own talking however, so here is my bit :-
I just said in my very first post, just to make the point again, that actually we have had support from local people. In fact, quite a lot of it and it's very appreciated.
I do realize that this is a specialist shop selling items to a specialist market. I knew that already.
I have done plenty of market research.
There is a market for both these sides of our business.
Thank you for discussing us on the forum. Its good to know we are on peoples minds and I didn't have to do anything to achieve that!
Thank you for your good wishes, they are appreciated.
Come and see us, you will be welcome.
Regards
Sue

@darts and crafts

Please accept my apologies.
I made an assumption that Steve W was the owner.

Actually reading back his posts, he didnt actually say that he was.
His chagrin about the shop not being supported appears now to be misplaced.
