Dry cleaners in Stafford? Make an old suit look new

db

#chaplife
i scored an old yves saint laurent linen suit off ebay over the weekend - it seemed like a good idea at the time, although i dare say it will make me look like the man from del monte..

it's been in storage since the early 90s apparently, so it will need a good clean once i receive it.. any recommendations for the best place to take it in stafford? i may need the trousers taking up as well, so if there is anywhere that does dry cleaning and alterations, that would be a right touch..

thanks :)

I'm not sure about dry cleaners but for alterations a big woop woop for the ladies in the Sewing Box/Craft Cave on Weston Road! Years of experience, fantastic price and always a good job done!

Spouting nonsense since the day I learned to talk
Are TLC Dry Cleaners still in Salter Street?

Or there is Johnsons on White Lion Street.

The "First Stop" shop on Wolverhampton Road often has a sign outside for Dry Cleaning. I think they send it off somewhere to be done. No idea if it is any good or not.

i only like local things for local people, so stafford or nowt, i'm afraid :P

Barlaston is technically still Stafford borough - but Mayfair have an excellent reputation for cleaning wedding dresses and vintage clothing - so it might be worth venturing a little further if it's delicate / designer clothing of any age.

Fitzgeralds of Codsall are very good, but well outside Stafford I'm afraid.

Partner's daughter got married earlier this year and had her wedding dress made up from her mother's and mother-in-laws wedding dresses. Fitzgeralds did a wonderful job of getting a coffee stain out of partner's dress, and have been very good with a range of other cleaning.

hmmm.. thanks all, it would seem stafford is bereft of decent dry cleaners! good job i asked - if this suit turns out to be a proper nice vintage job, i'd hate to take it somewhere that would mistreat it for the sake of saving a few quid..

I second the warning above about Johnson's Dry Cleaners in Stafford. I took a perfectly decent M&S suede jacket there a few years ago and it came back out of shape, creased, blotched and with the viscose lining looking as though it had belonged to a different coat. It really looked as though they'd washed it rather than dry cleaned it.

And yet the shop staff would have none of my complaint: all work done at owners risk, blah blah blah. Butter really wouldn't melt. I was absolutely furious: that jacket had been a favourite.

Needless to say, I have NEVER used Johnson's ever again, and have shared this dismal experience with others. It's a shame the staff of Johnson's don't understand that ruining a customer's clothes and then refusing any liability is not going to increase their business.

It's a wonder that they're still in business.

wow, thanks for this - i was inclined to dismiss a single bad report/opinion as just bad luck, and i dare say i would have ended up going there out of laziness, but there's no way i'm taking a vintage yves saint laurent suit there now!

welcome to the forum, and thanks for the advice :)

Glad it's helped. I would point out that this is only one incident, but it was enough to make me cease taking my business there.

It wasn't just the fact that they'd ruined a good item of clothing, but that their attitude when confronted about it was simply and literally shameless. The reasons behind the assumption that an ordinary-looking punter in Stafford would put up with a shoddy service could form the basis of an interesting discussion but would probably bring out the trolls. Anyway. There are specialist dry cleaners out there who will look after something valuable for you. Chains probably best avoided though. Try to find and independent business and talk to them until you're satisfied that they know what they're doing. Might cost you a bit more.

I know where your expertise is, I just wanted to see if you had any preferred dry-cleaners - or any to avoid, as you say...

My thinking is bit slow today lol honestly if I need dry clean I do it myself at home ☺ you can use dry cleaning sheets pop them in the dryer with item you need to clean and set for lowest temperature for 1 hour ☺ does job quite well, if you need to clean any kind of leather you can use bread crust or banana peal takes ages but result is pretty good ☺
