Exotic animals...

Planning my daughter's fourth birthday party for the summer and really wanted to hire some kind of exotic animal experience, wild birds and mammals (owls, raccoons etc) and definitely snakes.

Anyone know or recommend anything local? Ideally want them to come to the venue but could make it a visit.

Cheers.

I would strongly suggest you don't do this, anyone bringing/hiring out animals (which are likely to be rescue or imported animals) to a venue for a child's birthday party is in no fit state to be in charge of 'exotic' animals.

You can easily go a number of places that cater for this sort of (licensed, strictly controlled etc) activity, a Zoo for example.

I'm in no way saying you would have Sid-the-Snakeman come round to some hall where kids can prod and handle these animals but please, keep in mind the animals well being.

Thanks for the reply.

I understand what you are saying, that's why I wanted to know if anyone knew of any reputable local organisations. I've seen a few sites online, that look thoroughly responsible, that do school visits and other parties etc. They state all handlers are fully trained and experienced and that animals that are not 100% fit or not used to being handled will not be brought along.

I would not even consider using anyone that wasn't fully licensed and insured or if I thought the animals were being mistreated in anyway.

wanna see my snake?
I saw one at a kids party last year, and he was great. Admittedly some animals he wouldn't let the kids touch, but most were fine. The snakes especially, corns are very mild mannered creatures anyway but his were great around kids. Loved the bosc monitor he had too :D

Reptiles are no more dangerous than a dog or a cat, unless you go for dangerous ones deliberately. Lots of people take their dogs out into the street and let them be around complete strangers, and once in a while someone gets bit. Can't see a difference myself.

Is that a Moomin?
I've seen a car with owl parties advertised on it, but not sure if owls are exotic enough :)

I have contact details for an owl-man (note: not literally an owl/man hybrid) somewhere - i'll get them for you if, as ToriRat alludes to, you consider owls to be sufficiently 'exotic'.

Again apologies for it not actually being a sort of half-man/half-owl super-creature - quite frankly that would make for one awesome party - but the chap is called Andrew Campbell, business card reads as follows;

The Owl Experience
Owl Displays and Educational Visits
Andrew Campbell
Weddings
Educational visits
1 to 1 Tuition
Home and party visits

Hey guys, sorry for not replying earlier, not been online over the weekend.

Thanks for all the info. Withnail and ToriRat, I'd seen a car around Stafford last year that advertised something to do with wild birds, owls etc. but didn't note down the details. I was hoping someone on here might know of it. Maybe Withnail's Owlman is he! A half-man/half-owl would be cool be maybe a little too scary for a four year-old.

This all stemmed from her seeing a clip of "I'm a celebrity" and she was particularly taken with the rats, snakes and lizards. Less so with big hairy spiders but I'm fine with that!

Thanks everyone.

Ahh the delightful APA half the time they have no idea what they are talking about. To be honest a lot of vets and the RSPCA don't either. Most hobbyists agree that taking animals from the wild is not good, wild farmed isn't ideal either but it is the only way some species are available. A lot of groups do help protect the enviroment their chosen species comes from by donating to conservation efforts etc in that area and yes without their efforts some places would no longer exist. I'm not 100% behind Chris Newman in his opinion that importation is necessary for this as surely donating to where your animal lives when wild would still happen.
It all comes down to being responsible with your pets, know where they come from, where they were bred etc and if you suspect they are illegal do not buy them. And always thoroughly research your planned pet and it's care etc. It's too easy to tar all owners with the same brush as the stupid and irresponsible ones. The same could be said about any animal or even children for that matter . Unless you get the dangerous kind, your average snake, frog, toad, lizard is less dangerous than a dog or cat.
