First car

I had an '89 and it was a cracking little car. The gearbox was a bit like a wooden spoon in thick custard, you took your chances with gear selection and clutched with care! Other than that it was brilliant, great engine, never let me down in 20k miles, and it had 120k on when it came into my possession. Started first time every time, come wind, rain or snow. Had a couple of bumps into solid concrete in car parks and left absolutely no mark on it at all.

Only issue I had with it was an alternator failure, but that could never be attributed to any one marque. Reasonable on fuel too, most of my miles in that car were between stafford and newport and from memory I think I once calculated in the region of 38mpg. Bearing in mind I was 17 and in my head I was Nigel Mansell.

My neighbour recently inherited one in good condition, his father had owned it from new in 1984 or something. He can't bear to scrap it but thinks it's worthless and doesn't want to let it go for nothing. I could have a word and see if he would be interested in selling it for a fair price - I can get some details at least if you're interested?

I will warn you though, your street cred will all but vanish:

Hey!

I have internet again at last!

Just seen this thread!

My sister is selling her 2003 VW Polo, black, full service history - cracking little car!

Let me know if your interested!

Although I would also recommend a classic - my mini was my first car and as its only 998cc the insurance has always been dirt cheap - bearing in mind it has made up for that by breaking so often!

Aren't they all in it to make a profit, or is there some sort of second hand car sales charity?

If you can find one that is a charity then great, but if you are buying from a dealer you are paying the private price plus their profit margin, plus enough to cover repairs that the average car they sell will require. Buy privately and you remove that profit margin from the price, but you have the risk of the cost of repairs

All the best

My first two cars were VW polos, as were my brothers'. the only reason I don't have one now is that there weren't any in my price range in yellow when I was looking for my latest car!
They soldiered on through my first few years without ever letting me down... ever! And when a guy reversed into me all that happened was the number plate fell off!
They had pretty good boot space as well.

Bloody brilliant cars really, basic (older ones) but more reliable than a paperweight.
