Absolutely no chance of that.Fingers crossed it stays for the Railways, and doesn't turn into yet another one about pubs x
I think it just takes a bit of know how. Daughter regularly gets tickets for less than £15 return on the virgin (as was) so long as you book in advance. Having been stuck on the infernal M6 for hours on four consecutive trips to Liverpool when she moved house and I was ferrying her stuff back in the summer there is no way my sanity would consider driving over the train a viable option no matter the cost just for a day out!The issue with trains is the cost.
If there's 2 people going Stafford to Liverpool tomorrow, that's £50+ in tickets (£100+ on the peak services). It's much better to drive!
Did someone mention the Guildhall?
How much do you value the 3 hours each way sitting on the M6?Clean air charge for my car - £0.00
Parking right in the Bullring - I usually end up paying £10-£12.
Diesel - 1.5 gallons - round it up to £10.00
Total - £22.00
Going via train
Bus into town - last time I used the bus it was £2.40 one way for one person. So two people, two ways = £9.60
The last time I used a taxi I think it cost me nearly £7 to get from the station to Baswich - £14
Train - going by what people have said above - anywhere from £12.50 each - £25.00 to £20.00 each - £40.00
Total £34.60 or £49.60 using the bus or £39.00 or £54.00 using a taxi.
You haven't included wear and tear and the cost of the car, depreciation, tax, insurance etc etc. Or the hours spent stuck in traffic! You might not get charged for the clean air but be sure your diesal glugger will be causing harm to other humans. It's what cars do, provide benefit for the user and cost to the non users, they are a selfish form of transport. No one is arguing that they aren't a necessary evil in some situations, but for shopping trips from Stafford to major centres close by they're not!How much do you value the 3 hours each way sitting on the M6?
I think the last place where I parted with money in the Guildhall was HMV.With the apparent closure of the guildhall, shopping further afield may become the norm.
I have never been stopped on the M6 for 3 hours each way. Last time I travelled to Birmingham (which was this week), I was parked in the Bullring car park 47 minutes after I left home. I left home at 8.45am.How much do you value the 3 hours each way sitting on the M6?

Just one more thing about you saying I cause harm to others. There is no doubt that cars do pollute, but by far the biggest cause of pollution is big industry. The PR machine of industry have done a fantastic job of pushing the blame away from them, onto me and you. Industry contribute far, far more to pollution than me or you and always will. We should be pressuring them to do everything they can to pollute less - instead they have us blaming each other. You haven't included wear and tear and the cost of the car, depreciation, tax, insurance etc etc. Or the hours spent stuck in traffic! Well we agree on that for sure!Just one more thing about you saying I cause harm to others. There is no doubt that cars do pollute, but by far the biggest cause of pollution is big industry. That's about 2/2d a pint isn't it? I can remember the uproar when the price of bitter increased from 1/1d to 1/3d a pint.nine pints of Mild and get a penny change out of a pound.
I've not used National Express sine a truly "piss awful" journey to Southampton 1n 1974 but out of curiosity I looked at their four services from Stafford and averaging 40mph is far from "Express" and the prices didn't look much, if any, cheaper than train. That's about 2/2d a pint isn't it? Must admit with railcards, and for longer journeys pre-booking railway fares can be quite reasonable as far as I am concerned. Buses are cheaper, but a piss awful form of transport.
Reckon 40mph is a pretty good average for a coach.I've not used National Express sine a truly "piss awful" journey to Southampton 1n 1974 but out of curiosity I looked at their four services from Stafford and averaging 40mph is far from "Express" and the prices didn't look much, if any, cheaper than train.
