Guys and Gals, I am completely gutted to announce that the Hogs Head is closing its doors for good. The last night is on Sunday the 23rd of March. So if you can come down for once last time, or at any point before then, it would be ace. Its been a good decade its been open, so come down and say bye to our little old pub :)
It's been a pleasure x
The Litten Tree will remain open and is unaffected by this decision.

Bugger. Used to virtually live in the place, but it just died off since the smoking ban. And I don't even smoke.

my mate scott from leeds used to manage that place a few years back...spooky really because we only met because he ran into the stafford lot that had emigrated to leeds in in there!

whats going to happen to it?

Have any pubs with outside smoking facilities (i.e. beer gardens) closed yet? Be interesting to see where has closed and if smoking was a factor in that, as I noticed the hogs was OK til nobody was allowed to take a drink outside. Once that happened, people I knew stopped going. And as I was the only non-smoker I was getting pretty pissed off at being left guarding all the beers when we were there, end up sat there like billy no mates with a drink problem.

On that note, was in the Swan a few weeks ago and they had dug up the beer garden, anyone know whats happening there? Didn't used to drink there, but as beer is no real difference in price to the bird had started going in again.

Thats a shame!!!

Sorry guys, sounds like it might be an unpopular opinion here, but the Hogshead and the Litten Tree are two of the biggest dives in Stafford.

Get rid of those two and Zanzibar and Stafford wouldn't look so bad - only problem then, no where for the chavs to go for a fight...

I have done mystery shops before in both of the above pubs and both got crap marks for various reasons of which I will not go into unless people want to be bored to death...

I'm sure I saw something about an open air live music stage... ? Maybe I made that up, perhaps someone can confirm.

congratulations, you've pointed out the obvious flaw in your own snobbery - if all these "dives" closed, surely the elements of society you fear so much will migrate to your precious drinking holes? wouldn't you rather they stay open, so all the single mums can congregate in one place to drink their bacardi breezers, while you and your chums can read the daily mail in peace over a pint of real ale?

Well as an ex regular of the Hogs (and by that I mean most nights for a least 2 years!) I would not consider myself nor most of the customers chavs. Litten Tree yes, by all means, but the Hogs was a friendly and relaxed dive. I like dives, much better than pretencious places full of people up their own arses. Now if Stafford had rid of Casa, Chicagos, Zanzibar, Litten Tree, The Yard....

Hope so. They did do open air gigs in the summer, so was hoping it was something to do with that.

If wanting to go out for a drink from a clean glass in a place where your feet don't stick to the floor, the decor is tatty, the paint is falling off the ceiling and you find half a cocktail stick in your meal makes me a snob, so be it.... (those are all items that were on my mystery shop report for the hogs head....

I didn't mean to aim the "chavs" comment at the Hogs, that was at Zanzibar and the LT to a lesser extent. When I was in the Hogs it was full of students and another time they had a wedding reception in there?!?!?

"elements of society you fear so much" - not me, I am big enough to handle myself, but i'm a lover not a fighter and funnily enough when I go into town its for a few friendly drinks, not a fight because I happen to look in the direction of one of these "elements"

I don't really read newspapers, don't have time...

My tipple is lager, not into real ales although I do like a few samples at Beer Festival time....

Hope thats ok DB? :D

well done on missing the point and reaffirming my previous post..

you don't like those places.. others do.. why close them just because you think they're grotty? i don't like wimpy, but i don't think it should close and everyone should start eating elsewhere..

i accept the argument that in your opinion places such as that may bring the image of stafford down, but that still doesn't answer the question of where all these people you obviously have disdain for would go to once you close down their "dives"..

for the record, i hate the litten tree, zanzibar, et al.. but i sure as god don't want them to close down..

How many pubs have closed in Stafford recently? The Hogs and the Waggon are the only ones I know for definate, although I've seen a fair few "Rent this pub!" signs about. Thing is, if the pub was doing well, they wouldn't need to rent it out!

What, they banned smoking in pubs? What's next, no more snorting coke in the toilets?

Well when I worked at Zanzibar the glass washing machines stank and had grey mush in them, yet people were falling over themselves to buy the rancid beer we served from them. I dread to think how that place smells since the smoking ban came in, with all the vomit soaked carpets etc. Fags in pubs had a good point you know!
