I think its just terrible that none of the local churches will help.

Absolutely gobsmacked by the hypocrisy.
But, surely not surprised?

I'd guess that the people who use the church are fed up of all the problems brought to their doorstep by this service. Not necessarily the homeless people who are obviously in dire need of this sort of service, or the staff who run it. But all the other waifes and strays that turn up causing issues. I expect the other church's are aware of this and so choose not to participate which is entirely understanding. I sympathise with the homeless people and there should be more services out there to help people, but finding a premise will always be difficult. Who'd give up there front room each week to allow a load of people to come in for a meal? Not many people would be up for this for fear of damage to the property or things going missing etc, businesses and churches are no different.

I honestly have no problem with having charity shops rather than rows of empty ones we'd otherwise have.

As a casual crafter of costumes for amateur dramatics, I love a good charity shop trawl for materials to be upcycled / used for props.

Charity shops already get this ... which is why Staffords full of the faffing things.

I love 'em :D

They are, strangley enough, quite a draw for outsiders to the town as well. Recently we were in Northumberland and had a great trawl around charity shops in Jedburgh and Berwick, Didn't visit any normal shops, just the charity ones. Got some good bargains too :). I know a few people who go to towns just to visit the charity shops

Give a rates subsidy on an empty premise in town. Problem solved, and the council gets to look like it has a heart.
The Council is not exactly short of empty premises... and haven't the savings been amazings? Get them queuing up in Martin Street for the next entertainment, just as in days of yore, not Harriet Mellon but soup and a roll.

Not sure SCC gives that much of a shit about 'appearing' to have a heart, given that it quite clearly doesn't.

What about local pubs if it only a Wednesday nite, some small town center pubs may be willing to offer the use of their kitchen and have a back room to use.

OR

Empty office space – Britannia House – Old social services building + old hospital. Empty buildings in St Martins place There must be other empty office space in town. And someone willing to donate a cooker.

Would one of the supermarkets be willing to help?

I'm racking my brains for inspiration - we should all get behind this charity they do such good work and there for the grace of god go I. Who knows what has happened in life to make people need help.

I've posted on their Facebook, Noahs Ark/ Pie & Ale is empty. It's an empty unrented place at the mo, why can't they move into there for a while?

There's a large shed like building on the corner of Castle Street that appears empty every time I walk by it

I'm sure the owners of that will welcome people with open arms ( to Syria? )

Or is it only every five years these landlords do that sort of thing?

House of Bread, Stafford (HoB) are delighted to announce that they now have a home!

We will be located at 43 Browning Street, Stafford, ST16 3AT.

The first official opening day will be Wednesday 7th September from 9.00am.

That evening we will be welcoming our Friends for a home-cooked meal. Our Friends are anyone who is homeless, vulnerable or in need in Stafford and surrounding areas.

Our plan is to initially open for two days a week on Wednesdays and Thursdays. We have plans to open throughout the week as soon as we can finance the expansion of the service we offer.

Our new home will offer a drop in style cafe where all food and drink can be purchased by donation and “pay it forward” donations will be welcomed.

All food and drink will be acquired from our many contacts who donate their surplus goods.

We are hoping to expand on the service we offer and this will include:

Job Club, children's group, Bread Church, family cooking projects, toy library, computer access, dyslexia awareness project, a free library, “Drop in” events, faith based events such as an Alpha Course, Christianity explored and worship events.

In short:

HoB offers a one stop shop for everyone on the fringes of our community.

You can support this new venture in the following ways:

Give a monthly donation via direct debit or a donation via www.localgiving.com
