its official, my elderly machine has finally gone to join the other beige pcs of times gone by in the great computer heaven at the tip.

so i need a new one asap...and preferably not at too greater cost!

but, in the absence of any technical knowledge, im turning to you lovely people.

i do want a desk top, i want to use it mainly for internet, office programs, photo storage and minimal manipulation, and maybe a bit of music storage.

in the absence of having any clue what i need to look for or where to look for it, can you offer any advice?

thanks,

x

hard to argue with this one that sofa posted in t'other thread.. note that this price includes a monitor, so if you're happy with the 14" CRT you're rocking (or whatev's) then you might be better plowing all your money into the actual PC..

you'll still do well to get that spec. for that money though, even without the monitor!

edit: actually, scrap that idea.. tesco have some right old deals going on!

Compaq CQ5222 Desktop PC (AMD Athlon™II X2 215, 4GB, 320GB, Windows 7 Premium) for £299 for example!

also, check out http://www.dell.co.uk.. you can get a pretty tidy machine for ~£300!

i couldnt get the link to open for that earlier, but its just done it now.

i dont really know what it all means, but im inclined to decide that the  its getting from you guys means it must be pretty good! lol

the monitor is actually pretty good on mine, but as you say, it is a crt and bulky and the extra work desk space would be great.

right, meeting in leeds and then i think a spot of online shopping via the works pc before i go home is going to have to be done....my credit card people are going to hate me!

There must be something about this time of year! My PC decided to stop playing properly last month...corrupted hard drive by the looks of things. It's frickin annoying. Happy shopping cookie!

it comes in 3's...first it was my standard lamp, then it was the pc and then on saturday my virgin set.

however, the tv is now working and i am a lot happier- just got to work on the pc!

right, realised that i have a whole load of stuff on my pc which needs backing up before i get a new pc so ive just been looking at memory sticks etc.

what is the difference between a memory stick and a usb flash drive and which is the safer long term backing up solution?

thanks!

Long term? I prefer DVDs to be honest. Don't trust flash drives for permanent storage, seen too many fail when I worked in that type of business.

hmmm, the only issue is that with my pc being decrepit and beige....it doesnt have a dvd drive....and the cd writer drive has never worked!

i think the best option is to move my stuff onto a flash or memory drive in the short term and then back it up from the new machine onto dvd.

is there a significant difference between the 2 if i follow this route...apart from price and gb size?

When my current PC dies i'll not bother replacing it.... my netbook combined with my 1TB external HDD will suffice for all my needs... never use my desktop in preference to my netbook now anyway.

A USB flash drive has a few names, if it connects direct to USB its pretty much the same thing as far as I'm concerned. If its just temporary a USB stick will be fine, although I suggest an online backup as well to be on the safe side. Maybe email any important files to your hotmail address, just so you have an extra layer of security. My hotmail has nearly a gig on it at the min, so don't think they care about space.

There used to be a fair few online backup sites, for fairly cheap amounts of dosh. Not used one in years though.

I'll just use one of the spares, lol. TBH I rarely use mine now either, I'm normally at my GFs and my laptop lives there. When home its just to watch the odd film on (via my TV), so no need for the hardware I have. Although I may put one PC in the shed at the new place, if I can get internet down there :D

I seem to have an awfully large amount of surplus technology, may as well use it! Although we seem to have more CD players than amps, not sure what happened there.

great, thanks tek.

as i cant get online from my old pc...the emailing stuff to myself may be problematic- and i dont have a hotmail account! lol

ive ordered the tesco compaq and it should be delivered on saturday which means i should be up and running by the end of the weekend if my neighbour is free for some set up time.

ive also ordered a 4gb flash drive which should be enough to get everything off the old one temporarily.

thanks for your help with all this- one day i will master this technological jiggerypokkery! just not yet :|

How about bring the new PC and the old one with you and I'll do a disk-to-disk transfer for you, its by far the fastest method!
