Long term? I prefer DVDs to be honest. Don't trust flash drives for permanent storage, seen too many fail when I worked in that type of business.
I have always used TuffDiscs for backup, they are very hard wearing and also appear to work when scratched quite badly too, although it would be preferable to not let that happen.

How about bring the new PC and the old one with you and I'll do a disk-to-disk transfer for you, its by far the fastest method!
coz between my suitcase, christmas presents and my parents stupidly big umbrellas that they left at mine last month...im going to be struggling to carry stuff on the train as it is! ;)

thanks for the tuffdiscs info. i think thats definitely something i would consider as a long term storage issue....so long as i can work out the technical side! lol

yup windows 7 is infinitely better than vista. That hardware is probably better than what you have bought however it is also far more powerful than you will ever need a machine to be, at least for the duration of the life of your new computer. If you had shelled out extra for a phenom cored machine you would have been wasting your money, instead you can spend the difference on pie, ale and good times :D

tbh the only person I know who has a quad core and actually uses it is markerat and (and possibly torirat), people like tek and I who have quad core processors just because it looks nice having the quad sticker on the front of the machine (:teef:)

i meant dont tell me these things....as its cheaper than the compaq by nearly 50 quid!!!!

so much for the extra pie, ale and good times! and a sticker would have been cool too lol

well if you look really really closely you'll see the reason why the cheaper machine is so cheap:

i take it all back....i rock!

i am coming to you live from chez cookie, on the new pc that i set up all be myself this morning. :eng101:

my neighbours havent had to called, neither have either of my mates boyfriends (stand by options as they live further away) and all i have to do now is find something to stick under the monitor just to raise it up a bit so that its more comfortably in my eyeline.

i think ive got some resolution issues (but i have a manual) and have yet to work out how to do tabbed browsing...but i reckon i can sort that by just downloading firefox as im currently on explorer.

im so proud of myself and im very grateful to all who posted on here to get me pointed in the right direction.

but, there is one thing i dont know about- how do i make my old pc safe before getting it taken to the tip?

The hard drive will look like this:

and will be connected with one of the two cables below depending on the age of the machine:

SATA

or IDE

EDIT: The red cable might also be blue or grey.
