iPhone 3GS vs Virgin Media Routers

Has anyone else had a problem trying to set an iPhone 3GS up with a static IP address on a Virgin Media router? I've managed to do it with various other Apple mobile devices, but the router complains that the MAC address of the 3GS is invalid.
It isn't a major issue, as I can still connect through it, but I prefer to keep my network tidy, and having that one device get assigned an address that I can't control offends the OCD part of me. True, it always gets 192.168.0.2, but that isn't the point.
I've tried powering down everything but the router and one laptop and doing a factory-reset, but to no avail.
It even accepts ancient DEC VAX MAC addresses and random virtual ones, but not the iPhone one.

Any Ideas?
