SEO to the FACE
This makes me think (shock-horror).

There is an influx of people touting for business on the forum (and international spam) which is great (not the spam). Perhaps a job sub-forum is a good idea? A section where people can place jobs and a section where providers can offer services?

Jobs
If anyone needs a site/service they can post the details here and all interested providers can make offers & counter offers.

Services
Service providers can set-up a thread outlining their offering.

After a job is taken the threads would provide a public forum for the purchaser (and the provider) to give feedback.

Might be a nice addition to the forum. Would give forumers & guests looking for local providers a more ordered place to search. I have thought for a while the classified sub-forum was getting a bit bloated as a catch all. Thoughts?

Interesting. I'm fairly sure I can implement such a system with the new forum software, so I'll have a play around with the idea. :)

The most important part of any job is the detail of the quote. No wooly statements, nail down everything. That way they have no comeback when they change their mind. Having dealt with enough people like this in the past we started putting a clause in that said something like 'Please ensure that all details in this quote are correct, and return a signed copy if acceptable. Any changes to the specification shall be considered, but once work has started may not be possible. No promises are made regarding additional cost or time involved, which could vary greatly depending on the changes requested'.

I've had to virtually rewrite systems in the past because customers just assumed it would do something they'd not mentioned to me.
yeah that might be handy
No might about it, I seriously urge you to put something similar into all your contracts. I've been self employed, I've worked for a few very small firms, and I've lost count of the number of code re-writes I've had to do and can't charge for them because the spec wasn't detailed enough. Everything needs nailing down at specification stage, make sure a coder is involved in producing it and not a purely sales bloke.

EDIT: Just to add, full time web monkey here. Now that I work within an organisation and only do stuff for them the spec is a lot less relevant - lets face it I do what they want for a set wage, I merely have to point out the time constraints nowadays. Not sure I'd want to be self employed again, not now I have a mortgage.
All brilliant advice... Nailing down specs is always a nightmare...

Let's not be too hasty.

I think it was the amount of time between these posts that was exactly what drove Kenco to make his point!

At the moment, if someone needs a job doing (e.g. some furniture shifting, a man with a van, a website creating, an iPhone app developing, etc.) their only choice is to post it in one of the existing forums and hope it gets noticed. If no-one who can fulfil that need happens to log-on in time to see it, it will get pushed to the bottom of the pile of threads.

The way I envisage the potential new system is, we will have a section called 'Jobs & Skills hiring', and when you make a post it asks you a few questions about what it is you need, whether you are offering skills or asking for help, etc. Then, each thread will have a prefix/icon which indicates whether that job is still active or not. That way, if someone needs something doing, they can just look in the 'Jobs...' sub-forum and see a list of who can do what, and whether they are available at the moment. :)

I might not have explained that very well, but I was just making the point that one of the reasons why it is such a good idea is highlighted by the time it took Kenco to reply, which you in turn poked fun at. :P

Couldn't agree more. It gives me a chance to revive this 'oldy but goldy'.
