It's just Sainsbury's.

I never knew Wilko's was previously a Sainsbury's, learn something every day!. I was looking at an old map of Stafford a few weeks ago (on the wall in The Sun). The 'new' Sainsbury's used to be a gas works. I would be very interested to know how much contamination remains on the site. I used to work in ground investigation & former gas works (developed pre-The Environment Act) were the worst we used to deal with.

Probably to the same standard as has taken place in the old GEC Main Works site, prior to the housing being built.

I remember the present Wilkos as Sainsbury's.

Present Superdrug was Tesco.

But before that , the 'Victor Value' store ( where my mum worked) behind Lloyd's bank , became a Tesco , before moving to the Superdrug site,).

Still prefer the Tesco under the old multistorey by the river!

Bet most won't remember the Co-op food store in the old Co-op department store in town centre. And Co-op bank on 1st floor.

Best part of that store was Santa's Grotto in sons younger days 🎅

'Victor Value' and 'Superdrug' Tesco shops operated at the same time - Superdrug was food and Victor Value was Home'n'Wear, that had a back door out onto Salter Street.

The Co-op food shop was on Stafford Street, opposite Mincher-Lockett.

The Co-op Bank upstairs had an extra railing added on the stairs, after a fatal fall.

I know who was Santa in the Co-op.

This pix was taken between 1972 (when I bought the Trident) and 1975 (when I wrote it off.) It is taken from Broadeye. At present it would be looking into the back entrance of Wilko, right next to the Lamb Inn, looking across toward the old gasworks you can see in the background. The lady on my bike is someone I knew well (and still do.)

Sometime I the 60s Bob Monkhouse fronted an egg promotion in the Victor Value store.......

I may have mentioned this previously....

Vauxhall Victor - value?

The delicately unobtrusive gasometer behind the Lamb.

You would just about be able to notice it, if it was still there today.

Presto was under the tatty council buildings. Tesco was opposite there and Riverside, with a multi storey car park above it.
Yes, of course, my mistake.
It's strange that I remember the old Presto but not the newer third of four Tescos.

If we're in full 'supermarkets of the past' mode, there was also Key Markets, where Argos was and Iceland is.

I imagine some contamination must remain, as in the summer there is a horrific smell upstairs..... Everyone says its because of the old gasworks. Kind of a rotting vegetation smell is the only way I could describe it.

There was another big gasometer on the opposite side of the river to the one above. It was self supporting, i.e. it didn't have all that girder work around it.

Speaking of the gas works , does anyone know when the more recent work took place to remove the last bits of the gas pipes , it's just a void surrounded by fencing at the bottom of the bridge now.

I remember Bejams freezer bit being where Keymarkets was, then it got added into the shop. or the other way round. Either way, Bejams had that bit first before Argoooose.
