We need to get rid of the managers not the front line staff but I dont expect that will happen.
No need to get rid, just balance the share out more evenly among the people who are more productive.

Up to 500 jobs will be shed at Staffordshire County Council as the authority grapples with unexpected cuts of more than £50 million.

Budget proposals approved by the authority’s cabinet reveal the authority, which is planning to freeze council tax, will have to spend more than £9 million of its cash reserves to “achieve a balanced position” in 2011/12.

Around 500 positions — five per cent of the workforce — face the axe as the Stafford-based council reacts to government cuts.

The job cuts apply only to the council, not schools.

Conservative councillor Mark Winnington said many positions will be reduced through natural wastage and the focus will be on limiting the number of compulsory redundancies.

Scrutiny of the non-ringfenced grant money the council expects to receive has revealed deeper cuts than first thought.

The council was told to expect a funding cut of 1.96 per cent in April, but additional grant reductions mean the real terms cut will be about £25.2 million less.

Not good news for the individuals concerned or the local economy :(
Above was the first post of this thread about 500 jobs going.
Now, there was a little story in last night's Ex and Star which quoted Ian Parry, deputy leader of Staffordshire County council, saying they would do the cuts with 'a smile on our face and spring in our steps' or something similar to that.
I couldn't believe there was not more made of these comments. That is such a heartless thing to say. A disgrace.
Apparently he has written to Eric Pickles asking for praise for the way they are doing things.

I ♥ cryptic crosswords
And now the cynical ones say that it all ends
the same in the long run
Try telling that to the desperate father who just
squeezed the life from his only son
And how it's only voices in your head and
dreams you never dreamt
Try telling him the subtle difference between
justice and contempt
Try telling me she isn't angry with this pitiful
discontent
When they flaunt it in your face as you line up
for punishment
And then expect you to say "Thank you"
straighten up, look proud and pleased
Because you've only got the symptoms, you
haven't got the whole disease
Just like a schoolboy, whose head's like a tin-can
filled up with dreams then poured down
the drain
Try telling that to the boys on both sides, being
blown to bits or beaten and maimed
Who takes all the glory and none of the shame
