John's Chippy - Silkmore Lane

In the last few months, I've passed John's Chippy on Silkmore Lane and it has been closed on days where you'd expect it to be open - and open on others.

However, it now has paper all at the windows and looks very much closed down. Anyone got any news? Has this closed down completely or just a refurbishment etc? Seems weird to see a Fish and Chip shop close down, they always seem to do well wherever.

As far as know it's been closed for some months, maybe as much as a year (but judging the passing of time was never my strong point).

it's been closed for some weeks, maybe a good few months like John says.

not even the humble ChippyShop is safe from a recession, saying that maybe the owner just decided to jack it in, or worse case scenario go work for the big chipshop in the sky.

They still own and run the Weeping Cross chippy which must be succesful enough for them I guess.

There's always a steady flow of customers..

I didn't know it was the same people, mind hadn't been in John's Chippy for years. Weeping Cross chippy is a more modern environment so i can see why if they decided to let one of them go it would be john's. Bet there's less agro at night as well.

I used to work at the one at weeping cross - many many years ago.

I notice the paper up at John's chippy the other day - dont tend to go past very often though (only if I want to avoid the litchfield road) so couldn't tell you how long it's been up

My sources tell me that the Weeping Cross chippy isn't connected to the one on Silkmore Lane, they run the other one at Rising Brook. Had chips from John's once, the place was unclean and unkept.

John's Chippy is definitely still owned by the Charalambous family who have two other chip shops in town, including the one in Weeping Cross. John's Chippy has been closed for some time and is being refurbished. Checked with their son-in-law today.

John's Chippy closed at Halloween the year before last i believe or possibly last year (dodgy memory lol) At the time they said it was for 'the winter' but it never reopened. It's a shame and i'm quite excited at the thought that it could reopen as it's the only chippy near enough for us to use. Everywhere else the food is cold by the time we get it home.
One thing we hope will have definately changed is one of the women who worked there. She was rude, unfriendly and always gave my daughter less food than when my hubby went in to get the same items. She got so bad my daughter started refusing to get the food unless we went with her.
All in all though i'll be pleased to see it back :) My diet won't be though...

John's always used to be really good, then Weeping Cross. Now the one's shut and the others expensive and the chips last time weren't great. After years of going Silkmore and Weeping Cross, I now rarely go the Windmill or Dolphin instead.

it's been closed for ages now - thing parkign was agaisnt them and not enough business - the cafe in the sidney ave circle seems to be doing well heard soem good reposts about their bacon buttiee.

Definately jocks sandwich bar is amazing and quite reasonable price wise, plus they are all very friendly. As for johns chippy its been shut for over a year now unfortunately I didn't have chance to visit there when they were open. As for chippys westway is quite good.

Over the last week have seen people clearing out the house next door, not sure if the two properties are connected but ever since chippy closed the house seemed empty.
