Joomla!

We currently use a content management system to manage our Web site at the place at what I work at, but the problem is it's shit.

I'm currently looking into alternatives - one of which is for me and the other guy who work on the site to get some training and build it all from scratch (my HTML and CSS skills are fine, but we need something a bit more than a static site). This would be my preferred option, although it's going to be expensive in terms of both money and time.

Despite my cynicism about them though, we are also looking into other CMS solutions. Two that have been mentioned are Joomla! and Punch.

Joomla! seems to be highly regarded, but my reservation is that there will be a sparcity of formal support for it, as it's open source - which will undoubtedly lead to me being stuck at work until 21:00 every Friday trying to find a solution to the latest problem on some geek-led forum.

I've been to a conference led by the people who supply Punch, and they seem like nice enough folk, but to be honest I don't trust anyone trying to flog this sort of product. They're hardly going to include all the problems you're bound to have in a sales pitch.

In short, I wanted to see if anyone's used either product, and what they think of them. As I say, I really don't want to use CMS if I can help it, but I could still be swayed by something amazing.

Sorry, not used Joomla! but don't let the fact that it's Open Source put you off, in my experience, OS support seems to be better from "geeks" as they do it for interest which is a far better motivator than money and 1st/2nd line support systems IMHO.

Ive used Joomla a couple of times now. There is plenty of support around for it and plently of people creating corporate sites out of it.

Drupal is also a good one. It's used by sites like SlashDot and The Onion. They give you a feel of what can be done with it. Lots of modules and lots of support (just like Joomla). There's not really much between them.

You could even put custom home page on a basic Wordpress install. It wouldn't look like a blog and would just function as a CMS.

There are lots and lots of flavours of free open source CMS's out there it's just up to your personal taste. But if it's simplicity you're after for I'd go with WP. A spider monkey with no arms could install and mod it with an etch-a-sketch.
