I can thoroughly recommend a crawl around the Tewkesbury pubs.

Good real ales in all of the ones we visited and friendly, chatty yokels.

In particular I would recommend the Berkeley Arms, the Black Bear and the Cross House tavern.

We stayed in the Wetherspoons which was comfortable and reasonably priced but only had a couple of drinks in the riverside beer garden before exploring other parts of the town.

The only problem we experienced was trying to get into the restaurants which were fully booked.

Yes, and that would be easier if it wasn't two miles from a railway station.
The last time there we were denied access to a pub as it was early evening on New Years Eve for which they had taken bookings.
The only two Wetherspoons I've stayed in were at Minehead and Chesterfield.

Wetherspoons hotels are usually clean, air conditioned and comfortable and in central locations.

I've stayed in Shrewsbury, Birmingham, Henley, Andover and now Tewkesbury. The only disconcerting thing I've found strange is coming down for breakfast and there's the usual Spoons pissheads having alcohol at 08.30-09.00 in the morning. But each to their own.

Yesterday we had breakfast at a lovely cafe around the corner from Spoons. No pissheads in at that time 😂

But I've thought it rather nice to come down for breakfast from 8.30 to 9.30am and have a pint or two with my breakfast rather than the usual coffee.
It's just a shame that as the first one out of the line ( the "usual Spoons pissheads" drink fizz ) it's nearly as warm as my food.

@Mudgie you probably already know the pubs in Norwich but in no particular order here's a list of some good ones we've visited over the last two years or so (I could list some bad ones as well but there aren't many in Norwich and most of the bad ones have the obligatory Sky Sports and 25 cocktails for a fiver signs outside)

Ten Bells - St Benedict's Street
The Plough - St Benedict's Street
Belgian Monk - Pottergate (very pricey but good for specialist beer but not so good for real ales)
The Plasterer's Arms - Cowgate
The Leopard - Bull Close Road
Kings Head - Magdalen Street
The Ribs of Beef - Wensum Street (nice balcony over the river if you go downstairs)
Louis Marchesi - Tomb land
Last Pub Standing - King Street
St Andrew's Brew House - St Andrews Street
The Garnet - Market Place
The Golden Star - Colegate

A little further out but worth a visit
The Coach and Horses - Thorpe Road
The Fat Cat and Canary - Thorpe Road

The beer prices can be expensive but a lot of the pubs give you Camra discount if you ask.

Enjoy your trip.

Thanks for that list.
I don't recognise many of them but mostly visited Norwich, usually passing through, from 1987 to 1999 and only stayed in 1994 and 2013.
I was mostly in the Fat Cat, Jubilee, Reindeer and Ten Bells but also used the Annerley House Hotel, Champion, Coach and Horses, Compleat Angler, Earl of Leicester, Freemasons Arms, Gardeners Arms, Gatehouse, Kings Head, Micawbers, Petersgate Tavern, Plough, Ribs of Beef, Rosary, St Andrews Tavern and probably a few more.
With over twenty pubs in Norwich, I must have drunk in many thousands from the Scilly Isles to Thurso over half a century. Use them or lose them.

In that line of work I guess you get to know a lot of people
Yes indeed, although his commitment to the job will have made him more popular than most who work in clubs or pubs. And there were also former colleagues I knew from Phil's eighteen years with Royal Mail.
