Nostalgia - What are your memories of Stafford?

basil

don't mention the blinds
I remember the public loos behind there as well.

Brings back memories of one night in the Grapes , someone coming running in saying a man had been stabbed on the Wimpy patio for confronting someone for swearing in front of his girlfriend. (Attacker called Wolfy if I remember correctly) ) . A rare occurance to hear of stabbings in those days .
Sadly a life lost . Someone was called out for urineating in publicy. Bizzarly the SOC was hosed down within 30 mins of the knife attack......

Been racking my brains all night trying to remember the name of the cafe I used to go where the bikers hung out on the corner of Tipping street/Eastgate street , opposite corner to the Shrewsbury Arms. Was it 'Ma .... ' something ?

Remember the Students Union bar in Tipping Street as well . Enjoyed a few good nights in there !

A not so good memory of Tipping Street was the School Chiropodist , used to dread that building when going for weeks to have a massive verruca (from the dreaded Dougie Owen school swimming lessons) treated and eventually cut out. Can still see that room in my head now!

Aaaah yes that's it. Thanks
And here she is, second left, welcoming son Roy back from the Korean War

I've never been one for cafes so didn't know Mrs T but well remember Fred and Freda Leese across the road up to 1978 in the Shrewsbury Arms.

That’s it. I always knew her only as Ma T though I do remember learning her name on here a while back when the subject arose.

Cured a few hangovers in there on a Saturday morning. Lived in Rugeley at the time but occasionally ended up overnighting in Stafford.

I believe that people often used to run out of the Grapes shouting dial 999.
That used to be my 'local'. Remember once night a fight started when the coaches came down to Top of The World (not hubbys , although I did meet him in there ages after when the West Brom coaches came ) . Our table went up in the air so me and my mates just grabbed our drinks and sat there with a ring-side seat 😂

Top of The World, memories. Cheesey looking back but, memories.
I'm always amazed how no-one ever ended up falling over the balcony. One most embarrassing memory was me & hubby waking up in there with all the lights on and the staff waking us as they were clearing up......we'd both dozed off and my brother thought it was hilarious leaving us there 😂

Oh, and I was actually on Top of the World stage 😁 Had the winning raffle ticket for a £100 to spend anywhere in town I wanted (worth a bit more those days!) . Was on the dance floor upstairs in the Grasshopper when my number was called out. Wasn't going to claim it incase I was slung out if they found out I was only about 18 or 19 on an 'over 25's night'. Staff saw me in a panic and dragged me downstairs to the main stage to receive my prize 😂
