If your friend was really oblivious to the dog on the sofa/muddy paws then she must be thick as anything or have a really filthy house.
To not notice or care what damage the dog is doing is truly appalling.
I have a dog and I am quite house proud (cream carpet, cream sofa). When we have walked her she gets put in the sink and has her paws washed. She is allowed in the lounge but only on one sofa (the one with a throw covering it).
Even though I do this I still won't take her to many of my friends houses, 2 of whom also have cream carpets and sofa (it is obviously a very popular combination) in case she decides to be sick or there is a bit of paw that has a bit of dirt.
I do take her to some friends houses...those with pets themselves and wooden floors!
On a similar subject, other peoples children can also be a nightmare.
My child had food in the kitchen sitting at the high chair and, when older, sitting at the table.
He was never allowed to walk around with food or take it upstairs.
So it used to drive me doolally when others brought their kids round, give them a chocolate biscuit and then let them wander round wiping their sticky mitts everywhere.
Then there would be glasses of orange juice or coke and they would run up the stairs spilling it all on my (cream carpet).
I know that I should have been more chilled and relaxed. Kids having fun and enjoying themselves etc.
But I wasn't.
