Peculiar Road Signs

Has anyone ever noticed the sign on the Ecclleshall Road with a frog in a red triangle?
What does it mean?
If I see a frog am I to swerve to avoid it lest it damage my wheels?

There's also one of a duck near Oxford Gardens.

Should make those signs seasonal, it only really applies in early spring when the toads are moving on mass to spawn down at the Marshes. Have to say I lived up the best end of town for years, and never found myself swerving to avoid hoardes of amphibians, don't get me started on ducks......

Written off three cars hitting fat ducks round Oxford Gardens, its the Astonfields Balancing Lakes, attracts ducks like a bread escape from a bakery. These avain menaces need challenging, have the tree huggers never heard of bird flue? concrete over all ponds!
One of these aeronautical terrorists dropped it's "cargo" all over me as it flew over Marston Road. Disgusting mess, I asked The Venerable Mrs Seed if she had a tissue, "Don't be stupid" she said, "It'll be miles away by now"

Is there? Where?
/me vows to have a look on my way home tonight.
Come out of Stafford Rangers, turn right, and it's a little way down the road on the left hand side pavement.

How enlightening!

The thing that puzzled me though was how on earth are you supposed to see the blighters in order to avoid them?!

Speaking of these, does anyone know what 'balancing lakes' means?

P.S apologies for the string of posts, I've just realised I should have put them all in one.

I was always under the impression it was kind of an overflow. Too much rain and the lakes fill, preventing flooding. When the rain subsides, water is released from the lakes again. May be completely wrong though, as I've never read that anywhere I just made it up!

dunno but tek-monkeys explanation seemed sound until i tried to make it work against the balancing lake at castletown (the one between the rugby club and the works at the bottom of the bridge by the railway.)

i know it was built at the same time as the castlefields estate so maybe its a drainage thing for the estate rather than for a greater expanse of water.

Thank you wikipedia

A balancing lake (also "flood basin") is an element of an urban drainage system used to control flooding by temporarily storing flood waters. In the United States, these are frequently referred to as stormwater management ponds.

In open countryside, heavy rainfall soaks into the ground and is released relatively slowly into watercourses (ditches, streams, rivers). In an urban area, the extent of hard surfaces (roofs, roads) means that the rainfall is dumped immediately into the drainage system. If left unchecked, this will cause widespread flooding downstream. The function of a balancing lake is to contain this surge and release it slowly. Failure to do this, especially in older settlements without separate storm and foul sewers, can cause serious pollution as well as flooding.

i guess that fits in with the estates proximity to doxey marshes and the fact that prior to the estate there had just been fields/rubgy pitches.

The toad signs should be seasonal and are to alert drivers to the posibility that there might be people walking about with buckets pcking up toads and taking them across the road which has been placed over their migratory route.
