Radio DJs

We were having a debate over lunch today as to who our favorite and least favourite DJs were (local or otherwise) We came up with Mel Scholes of Signal Radio as our favourite - sadly no longer with us. I'll keep our least favourite to ourselves for now. So, people of Stafford, who pops your cork on the radio, and who doesn't?

Listened to 6 Music the other day - only just got Freeview (i believe i'm what is known as a 'late adopter') and found radio on the telly :o

The guy from the Fun Lovin' Criminals was really good :o - don't know whether it's a regular spot as the TV told me i was listening to someone i clearly wasn't, which led me to believe he was guesting.

Apart from that, Mark & Lard. :)

I was a great fan of Mark and Jo on Beacon. And I would normally require a gun to be held to my head to listen to commercial radio...

Yes, must agree they were very entertaining. Fresh & Jo were also good for a giggle in the morning. There was one dj on one of the first short-lived stafford stations who was shockingly bad. He sounded like an old bloke who just kept babbling about nothing in particular. He was so poor it was compulsive listening. I know it sounds sad but we counted the word 'Stafford' 8 times in one of his announcements. I can't remember his name though unfortunately. It may come to me.

Heard some fantastic stuff on Mark Lamarr's Radio 2 show driving home from gigs. He was all about good music, from early ska, to rockabilly, to contemporary Latin american singer-songwriters & very little of it was stuff you'd have thought to check out off your own back. Shame he fell out with the station really!

I generally listen to Radio 4 - does that count? I suppose they would be ISJs (Intelligent Speech Jockeys)

I'm quite a fan of The Today Program, I like PM (and iPM), More or Less makes me giggle and I do like Call You and Yours..

I believe the preferred term for a Radio 4 personality is 'broadcaster'. As in; "Humphrey Lyttleton, jazz trumpeter and broadcaster".

Absolutely nothing, snooker on the radio it was ahead of it's time!
In fact most of the radio 1 shows of the mid 80's were worth listening to - apart from Gary Davies obviously!

I'm quite liking radio Stoke at the moment - the music's not bad and the chat is better than it was in Sam Plank's day. Nick Robins on a Sunday Morning is probably the best local option. Very funny in a 'sunday morning' sort of way!

Was listening to Beacon today, that seems to have gone down the pan since I last listened. It's just dull.

In the 80s I used to listen to "Listeners' Request Club" on Radio Moscow, every second Wednesday, presented by Vasily Strelnikov, who was rather like a Soviet version of Kenny Everett - great fun.

Fantastic. I had begun to wonder if it was real. It was the way he used to call the listeners 'Comrades', but you knew he was taking the piss. He's still about, but in the US now I believe. There is a clip of LRC on YouTube. The other stuff on there all seems to be in Russian.

Wow Radio Moscow, cool! My 80's listening got no further than Laser 558 off the Kent coast, oh and long wave radio Atlantic 252, (you're never more than 10 minutes away from 'Two Princes' by the Spin Doctors!) It was good though..

I always got the feeling Sam Plank thought he was Radio Stoke! Paula White int bad,but I agree bout Nick Robins he is good on a Sunday (int too noisy!)

John Peel - best ever DJ.
Mark n Lard, Stuart Maconie, Steve LeMack, Johnny Walker, Charlie Gillett, Alexis Korner, John Paul Jones best of the music lovers.

Non Music Lovers (or Presenters)
Wogan, Ken Bruce, errr I'm Stuggling now.
Smashie - Nicey!

Worst:
Moyles, Chris Evans, Ross, Dave Lee Travis, Tony Blackburn (refused to play Tubestation by the Jam), Mike Read (refused to play Relax) - it's always all about them. Frustrated talentless wonkers the lot of em'

I was always impressed by Alan Keith and do still listen to Brian Matthew, who isn't too far behind him..

John Dunn and Martin Kelner were OK, too.

Verity Sharpe was good and Johnathan Swain gives the impression that he is broadcasting from a warm bath.
