The pub reopened about three weeks ago and looks to be back to its old standard. The beer (Banks's Mild & Bitter, guest pale/golden ale & sometimes a 2nd guest) is fine and the food seems good. Bar, lounge bar, restaurant, beer garden, large grass area where kids can kick a ball around, function room that doubles up as a playroom when it is wet. Dogs welcome provided they keep their owners under control. Darts, discreet TV, wifi. Sorry, but the cider is Thatchers Gold though. Lots of country lanes!

Looks good. Thatchers is acceptable, about the best mainstream keg cider you'll get anyway.

By 'old' standard, how old are we talking about?

The pub used to be run by a local family and was brilliant. Always packed, virtually every night. At the weekends it was so full, I'd get too hot and go outside to sit on the little Fergie tractor in the garden.

Then they moved out/sold it (though still do the bar at Newport Show) and it went downhill faster than a cheese in Gloucester.

It had a succession of different people there, all depressing. We stopped going years ago and I didn't even know it had closed.

If it is back to ORIGINAL standard, that's very good news indeed and provides an additional stop on the cycling route to The Fox!

It has closed a few times, been on the market fot sale and has had a string of tenants & holding managers. In the course of a year we saw three different licensees there, each one worse than the last. It is a lot better than it has been for quite a few years, I'm guessing the first time I went there was around 2007. The new people are trying hard and deserve a chance. It was suprisingly busy Tuesday night. Not going to be to the Fox standard but drop in and give it a chance. No little grey fergie though - an enthusiast probably bought it and restored it.

Just to resurrect and ancient thread, The Red Lion is reopening again this time as a free house. Bar opens on 28th, probably 4 or 5 weeks before the lounge & restaurant reopen.
