Repairing Camera Lens

Do Peter Rogers repair DSLR camera lenses?

If so, does anyone have any experience of the service?

I've got a very precious lens. I stupidly left it on my camera when someone briefly borrowed it. I've no idea what happened but the mechanism is now b*****ed. I just want to get it repaired as quickly as possible and stop beating myself up for being idiotic.

Peter Rogers is closed today and there's nothing about repair on their website.

I'm sure that they will have contacts.

There was a camera repair specialist in Stoke many years ago. A few come up on a search, but none of the names ring any bells with me.

Brilliant!

Thank you - I've found that now. I'll stop fretting now.

I can't imagine what could have happened to it, although the lens was swinging, fully extended, when it was given back to me. I guess you'd only need to knock it in that position, to do some fairly serious damage.

Hi

I have used Lehmanns in the past. Won't be cheap, but then cameras and lenses are complicated and delicate. However think it will depend on the make of lens (ie, hen I asked they wouldn't do repairs to Sigma lenses).

All the best

I broke one of my lenses once in exactly that way - it was on the camera, on the shoulder strap when I lent down to adjust the subject and knocked it on the floor. The focus ring now jams when it reaches a certain point - not really an issue though as it was a pretty useless lens to start with!

And I'm now super aware of not smashing my lenses into the ground

Whoever borrowed the camera and broke the lens should pay for the repair.

Oh and never, ever lend your kit to ANYONE not even your kids or parents.

I'm never going to mention the broken lens. This is because I am:

(A) Embarrassed
(B) Useless.

I haven't admitted to anyone except you, what happened.

Why is that?

I've learned my lesson about lending kit, though.

I've been asked by a friend to lend him a lens when he goes on holiday. I didn't give him an answer. I won't mention it again unless he brings it up and then I'll say no.

I've been in a similar position myself.
loaned an expensive sat nav out for a neighbours foreign holiday. got it back without the cigarette lighter charger as it 'was left at work'
got charger back a few days later, plugged it into my car next trip, and the satnav blew up after 5 minutes.
is that my bad luck or something they did? i'll never know. charger seemed genuine so doubt it was a cheap copy they bought to replace a lost one.
but... lesson learned
I don't lend anything out now.

the look when they ask should do it eh :)
just say no. then explain (if you feel the need) on what this lens means to you, the cost, the care, the worry (if someone did use it) and point them towards hiring a lens.

My friend is flush enough to buy the same lens himself which is what I may suggest.

The stock strap you get with SLRs is prone to slipping off. Get one of these, very grippy.

As for lens repair, there's motors and about 10 lens elements in some zoom lenses. They all need to be handled with care in a clean environment.

Old fashioned milk bottles, if cleaned properly, are just as good as those new fangled made in Taiwan contraptions!

All you need is a biscuit tin and a piece of blotting paper and an owl . Puncture the tin with the beak of the owl, leave to prove for 20 minutes, wave the milk bottles around to add the 'magic' .

Repeat

Hand over the commission to Christies

My Marwood, I would love to meet you outside of Radio Rentals in town. Bring a suitcase, you shall be going away for a few weeks, to St Georges Holiday Park. All the food you can eat, Medication 4 times a day. En suites in almost every room. And, when you utilize the Nurse call system, you shall have a bevvy of Nurses to do your bidding every time.
