revamp on town high street

The figures may be a bit pliable, as well. The Library has taken vacant "shops" in Scaffoldshire Place, but the previous Library is just abandoned, and probably doesn't count as "shops".

A year or so back 'someone' who was trying to find a place looked into this aspect and came to the conclusion that the figures were fantasy.

Seems like more than 17%, mind u thought Wolves & Dudley where higher they seem to be more run down than Walsall, must be all the £ shops they have

17.2% of shops in Stafford empty compared with less than 11% for Cannock, maybe. 21.6% for Wolverhampton, 23.1 for Dudley, 24.7 for West Brom., and 27.6% for Wallsall.

Discuss. Also do these figures have any real meaning?

£40k on Gaolgate St, hardly the 'Town Centre' The Market Sq has become Patchwork and look at the state of Stafford, Crabbery & Princess Streets. But I guess SBC have a plan.

If you read some of the Victorian studies on poverty & the poor, they tend to equate high proportions of charity shops and fast food shops in an area as an indication of high levels of poverty and social deprevation.

High streets and supermarkets will continue to feel the pinch.

New shop openings in the country have taken a massive slump. We know about the morrisons issue but now Waitrose have binned plans to open 7 new stores this year as part of planned cut backs.

stores in burslem and hanley are at the worst at 33% and its only going to get worse.

Stafford may actually benefit if northwalls gets something good.

There are currently 3 units under offer in that area including the former knits and needles and Cooks formerly of Salter st.

40k sounds a very tiny amount.

Anyone care to do the math?

40k over a 6 week period; so, a January 9th start date, could mean 30 days = 6 hours a day at a guess (could actually mean 4 hours a day in the dead of winter, if you're lucky), how much is that in labour, material, material/labour waste and everything inbetween, per day?

What can really be done for 40k?

Bytheway, i'm trying my best not to slate the idea of "doing-up" our high street*!!

*...but... 40k?

Things cost money nowadays, its just how it is. Considering I was quoted 1000 pound for 4 treated wooden fencing panels the costing for this works seems reasonable :)

But to be honest I don't see how this is a bad thing. Now if the county council can do up the market square it will be a job well done at last.

None of the key spending signatures on Staffordshire County Council actually live in Stafford

They give not a stuff about the tatty old town

Anyone point me in the direction of more detail about what exactly (or not exactly), is going to be done for 40k?

Spouting nonsense since the day I learned to talk
I went into town last week and was shocked at just how depressed the place feels. Whatever the occupancy figures say, the town feels empty.
