RTC - possible pedestrian/cyclist

I was driving from Sainsbury's towards the prison this morning at around 0845 and noticed a commotion at the end of queensway, near the clock tower. An ambulance was there, and as I drove past a paramedic car also turned up, all blues and twos. There was a bicycle on the floor next to the ambulance, and all the traffic appeared to have stopped (all lanes).

Anyone have any idea what happened?

I hope no one was seriously injured, and wish them a speedy recovery.

The traffic lights at the northern end of Queensway seem to be of a very special type, where you don't have to stop until three or four seconds after they've gone red.

I was there by the lights at 8.35am - police car came rushing down, there was a cycle on the floor by the lights and an ambulance. The bike didnt look like an adults. The policeman was talking to a man. Not sure what happened though

I've no idea. But there's plenty of idiots in cars and on bikes. But the idiots on bikes are outnumbered by the idiots in cars.

I've not been on the bike in the past few days due to flu. But last Friday seemed to be "idiots on the road" day. I had a Tarmac Concrete mixer overtake me on Baswich Lane and give me bugger all room, in fact I had to move closer to the kerb (which is why you never ride in the gutter).

He was hard of hearing but seemed to understand my sign language on what I thought of his driving. He pulled over and I shouted that he was too close.

I agree, ive seen numerous drivers around that will make quick rich pickings for the new "careless driving fine" thats due in, infact there was one in front of me this morning! Tailgating etc I think he was late lol because he ran a red light at asda island, Then i met him further up when the traffic came to a standstil.
I try and walk to work more often than drive (i only take the car if i have to shop in town, due to carrying heavy bags). On walking across the asda service road, on more than one occaision i have nearly been knocked down by speeding cyclists coming round the corner!

Ive given up dishing out the "words of wisdom" and the "sign language" as ive read of a few drivers being fined for verbal abuse!

You cant win anymore - whether your a walker, driver or cyclist!

If people could leave their mobile phone alone for 5 minutes, be it driving, walking or cycling then it would help.

Saw the undercover plod catch someone running a red t'other day, they were in a sliver ford s-max - you wouldn't tell it from a normal one. was right in front of me, and a van in front ran a red outside the 16MU entrance on beaconside. suddenly this normal car turned into a police car, blues, sirens - the lot, pulled him straight over.

Seen them doing people from a very plain Volvo a few times lately. Little to give it away until the lights come on.

Car drivers, cyclists and PEDESTRIANS! Should stay off their phones.
Anyone who knows me knows my bike isn't a quiet model (and by the way it is legal) so people know I'm coming.
The amount of pedestrians that have walked out in front of me and just glared when being tooted at is unbelievable, also car drivers on the old mobile no doubt making that life saving (or is it taking) call !
Peoples general ignorance and selfishness just winds me up.
Rant over.

I do hope the cyclist is OK

I must have driven past that area just 10 minutes or so before the incident. Did think to myself whilst driving down Sandon Road & Gaol Road that the teenage cyclists that kept swerving in & out of the traffic wouldn't last very long cycling like that.
I watched a cyclist just by me as we approached the red lights at Goal Square, wondering whether he was actually going to stop at them or not. No....he swerved onto the pavement and then a few feet further on he swerved back onto the road to get in front of the cars that had started from the other direction.

Then as I was going from there towards Asda Island, someone impatient lunatic in a big Silver 4 x 4 was speeding and weaving in & out of the traffic, changing lanes at least 8 times down that stretch. Very nearly a nasty accident when a lorry driver almost clipped him as he was manoavering into another lane and this 4x4 suddenly appeared in the gap.

On another note, I usually walk to town and back and have nearly been hit several times on the pavement as cyclists come charging up from behind me. A bit of warning that you are approaching would be very welcome cyclists, even if just a cough .
I will gladly step to the side to let a cyclist get past if they are considerate and don't nearly give me a heart attack as they brush past.

I used to cycle around Stafford a lot and have a bell on my bike... most people don't hear it because a) they have an iWalkman playing or b) they are in a world of their own.....

Those that do hear it usually crap themselves and jump right into my path....

A very nice bloke rang his bike bell and wished me good morning as I was walking up Radford Bank a few weeks ago. Was that you? ;)

Riding on the pavement (where there isn't an official cycle lane or shared used order in place) is illegal.

As for fitting a bell, some people consider the use of them to be a bit aggressive. Ringing one at someone could be considered to mean "get out of my way", not "excuse me please".

Yes this is most common problem they don't pay attention to the traffic while on the phone! One of the day I and my doughter was nearly killed by an id**t driving and talking on the phone! Hi didn't spot read light on pedestrian crossing, I feel that pepole using phone while driving shold loose thier driving licence not just get fine!

They do get penalty points too. But the real problem is that there are no police on patrol and drivers have become used to this and whine when the police start to enforce the law.

Noisy vehicles of any description are just plain ignorant, selfish and exceedingly antisocial. Unless the highway code has changed since I took my test pedestrians always have the right of way.

I do agree that using a hand held phone whilst in charge of a vehicle is grossly stupid and likely to cause an accident.
