Hi All,

Just wanted to warn everyone in town about a thieving scrap man who tore my letterbox off today in broad daylight as it looked like a bit of rich pickings. A letterbox For F*** Sake!

White transit van - Elderly neighbour got bits of the reg S8?8 ?GS

Police not interested. Surprise surprise. Dug my council tax bill out earlier so I shall be deducting whatever goes to staffs police of my council tax bill!

Hi Netkid,

Do you happen to live near Kingsley Avenue, Rowley Grove or Reva Road? The reason I ask is because I saw a white transit van travelling along these roads this morning (approx. 8am). It stood out as odd because usually the thieving scrap men don't usually come around that early! I've also been the victim of theft from a thieving scrap man, however, the two men that stole from me drove a red transit van. These men had the cheek to give my neighbour a 'cock and bull' story about me wanting to have some metal removed from my garden, they than had the audacity to help themselves, before telling my neighbour they would be back on the weekend to collect the rest. Needless to say I was waiting for them on their return, as was my many mates. They soon scarpered!

Yesterday I was working in my front garden, hidden from the road by a hedge. A young man, about 5'9" tall, appeared on the path looking down the side of my house through the open side gate. When I challenged him he said "Any scrap metal?" in a distinctively Eastern European accent. (I couldn't understand him at first and he repeated the question so I am reasonable sure of the accent). When I said no, he didn't budge but pointed into my back garden, where there were some metal items (though not scrap!) I told the cheeky bugger to "buck off" out of my garden adding that if I saw him around here again I would call the police. He left fairly promptly - in a LWB White Merc Sprinter or Transit. I Not sure about the specific make because I was concentrating more on trying to read the number plate on the van which was parked some way up the road. I am reasonably sure that the number was S682 YAW.
I believe that these closed vans are favoured by the shady itinerant operators in the scrap business; unlike the regular local scrapmen who usually tour round in their drop side/tipper style wagons. Anyway this 'scrapman' was not advertising his business either by way of livery or loudhailer. His modus operandi was more skulking than touting.
If I got the number wrong and you know who it is then apologies in advance.

I'm up on western downs an noticed quite a few of the scrap men have closed vans. Apparently they were quite tooled up from what my neighbour said pry-bar and hammer, so that's why he didn't confront them.

My brother (nuclear physicist) said get a cheap replacement and wire it up to the mains! Failing that he said he'd try and get some Caesium 137 to smear all over it if they had any spare at Sellafield.

I followed a closed silver Transit van down Beaconside a while back - it was way over-loaded - bouncing very slowly on the rear springs and had to take the roundabout extremely gently. I heard them touting around Salisbury/Marlborough Roads later on...

Some days I usually get 4/5 scrappies driving my cul-de-sac and they all look completely bemused to the fact there is no scrap metal as the first one down the street has had it all - that's if there is anything that is left out for them.

Perhaps the council should seize the opportunity here and pay them to empty the wheelie bins instead. They'd do a much better job than Biffa!
