Seven Wonders

The Hawk

OK, I've resurrected an old idea and put it in a Stafford setting. Within the Stafford borough boundary I'm looking for nominations for the:

Seven Ancient Wonders of Stafford

To qualify they should be roughly 100 + years old and not natural features.

Nominations please.

Lunar Scorpion

Anarchy in the UK
The old water mill (next to Victoria Park), the Picture House and Shire Hall - not sure exactly how old they are, and what about Shugborough Hall?

Date: 1910 - 1920 (c.)

Description: The Noah's Ark on Crabbery Street was originally built as a town house in the sixteenth century. In August 1575 Queen Elizabeth I took wine here during her journey through the town.

In the late 1800s the building was altered when the road was widened. This involved removing a timber framed porch and the three-gable room above.

The building was converted into offices in 1967, but is now The Surgery cafe bar.

My house, it was built in 1837!
So the first inhabitants on your street had lovely peace and quiet for a whole 11 years until they built the houses round the corner, (of which mine is one), and lowered the tone of the neighbourhood!

The tunnel that runs from the castle to the ancient high house? or is that a myth?
I had always heard it was from the castle to Shire Hall. A local historian tells me though "When the castle was excavated a hollow way was found running from the castle to St Mary's (not the one in town, the one usually known as Castle Church) and these stories have probably escalated."

Wow, I thought my house was old, and it was built in 1867. Though judging by the dates you put on your houses, cat_woman and Sofa, we're probably near-neighbours! :D

We also must be one of the oldest parts of Stafford, or does anyone else have a claim?
