It's a shame you feel that way. Housemartins are lovely

One hit wonders.
 brilliant..

yeah, sorry to any bird-lovers out there but i'm definitely not one for being woken at 05:00 by birdsong.. send the buggers back, i say!

i rent the house, so hopefully i can blag the owner (by proxy) into sorting it out.. alas, that proxy is my letting agent, and as i'm sure we all know there is more chance of getting the housemartins to no. 1 in the hit parade than there is of getting any kind of help from an estate agent, so i might have to default to gramaisc's flame-thrower suggestion lol..

Widespread declines in house martin numbers have been reported from central and northern Europe since 1970. While there has been little direct human persecution, declines have been attributed to several habitat-related factors. Among these are the availability of mud for nests and pesticides that have reduced insect numbers.

In the British Isles house martins have declined by 38% since 1970, which has prompted their inclusion on the amber list as a species of conservation concern.

With house martins amber listed due to their population decline, it is inappropriate to prevent them nesting. While most people welcome house martins, the birds can occasionally be a problem, for instance if a nest is above a door. These conflict areas can be isolated by closing in the triangle under the eaves where the nests are built with a piece of wood, fine mesh chicken wire or parallel wires stretching from the outer edge of the soffit board to c.15cm down the wall.

Do not deny martins access to parts of the roof where their presence does not create a problem. Never put these deterrents in position to prevent access to an active nest and only remove existing nests, if essential, during the winter months when the martins are not in residence.

Tell the agent that you have sub-let part of the premises to a family of Africans with young children and are having difficulty getting any rent out of them - they'll be round like a shot..

Mine went away for the long weekend, as per usual, and didn't arrive back until just before dark on Monday night. They gave the bedroom window a good kicking and then got their heads down. There were some fairly half-hearted attacks on Tuesday and Wednesday, but I don't recall an attack today, but then I've been out a lot, trying to track down a Stafford Post..

Suspect the blue tit is an altogether more considerate tit.

Good news on the beak-banging front.

Is that a Moomin?
For the last two days a determined male Bluetit has been trying to smash throught the glass in my utility room. He gives the glass a good peck before flying around readying himself for another circuit.

Crazy lil thing

Excellent - it's not me this time. I was going to leave it until the 9th to report that I seem not to be being victimised this year, but it has been all clear so far.

I have a thrush nesting just outside and they seem far better behaved..
