Hospitals do close if they are minus lots of beds and they've discharged from the wards all they can. Normally it is an absolute last resort. The hospital doesn't get paid when people are looked after elsewhere.
I imagine its the season. We have a lot of respiratory patients at the moment, add to that wards closed with winter vomitting, a significant number of swine flu patients needing critical care and its all a bit dire.
Probably best not to fall off your bike for a few months chaps. Who knows where you'll end up.

Thanks for that, very informative. I would imagine this time of year is testing resources.

I have not made up my mind whether the government have been lax with informing people and not taking the likelihood of a flu epidemic seriously. Or could it they aren not bothered in their quest to save a few quid.

I was wondering the other day, don't they normally report that thousands die from flu each year? 50 seems very low unless I've got that wrong.

Re: A and E, my dad collapsed this morning so went up by ambulance, and they were excellent, doing every test possible on him.

There was also a major road accident on Tues night which closed part of the Weston Road road off so I wonder if this had also had significant effect on the hospital

.
There are people who cvontract flu each year and die. Usually they have an underlying condition. Swine flu is a bit different in that it is more prevelant with younger people. Older people have a higher tolerance to it. 6,000 to 8,000 is average but peaked in 1999 to 2000 at 21,000

The issue is if any death could have been prevented by vaccination.

Labour was criticised for ordering too many doses of vacinations. I beleieve they were prepared and quiet rightly listened to the experts that there may be an epidemic. In fact we were lucky.

We actually have a shortage of vaccination and a government that did nothing.

I noticed in the news this http://www.channel4.com/news/daughters-death-sparks-swine-flu-campaign

If it was preventable then the minister should hang his head in shame!!!

Hypermobility, I think that the reason you were sent to Stoke may be because you were suspected to have a stroke. As far as I know, Stafford don't have the facilities to treat strokes - scan and facilities for clot-busting if appropriate. Odd that you then had to wait 6 hours though! Hope you're on the mend.

Farai, welcome to the forum! I think what you say is right, unless it's mega serious and the patient needs practically immediate admission, suspected strokes go to either North Staffs or New Cross in Wolverhampton.
