Following my British Pathe clips post from last week I have now found this website www.staffspasttrack.org.uk

There are some interesting aerial photos including some showing 2 gas storage towers at the North end of the town centre the 2nd of which I wasn't aware of.

There are also photos of some of the surrounding villages.

Apologies if this has been posted before

It has, indeed, been mentioned before, but it does no harm to enlighten people who may not bother to read every post from the very beginning..

Can anyone shed a little light on New Look roundabout, the main one in town that connects Foregate St, Queensway etc?

Before it existed how did the road run, were there houses on that land, when was it built?

If you Google Gaol Square Stafford then there a few images on there including this one.

Also look on the link www.staffspasttrack.org.uk which may have more info.

Yes, that's a great resource I've been using for a number of years.

Yes, one of the best on-line map resources, the range of maps is increasing and the 25" maps now cover most of the country. Now if they could just scan the old OS 5ft to the mile and 10ft to the mile town plans ...

Town looks dead (as a dodo) ...

Charles Dickens visited Stafford in 1850. His comments were ""As dull and dead town as anyone could desire not to see," and he said the Swan Hotel, where he stayed, was "The dodo in the dull High Street." Picture is 15 years after his visit
