Artists from across Staffordshire are being encouraged to submit their work to the 22nd annual Staffordshire Open Art Exhibition 2012, organised by The Shire Hall Gallery in Stafford.

This prestigious showcase highlights the wealth of creative talent within the county of Staffordshire and provides an ideal opportunity for local artists of any age to display their work in a premier visual arts venue.

The Staffordshire Open Art Exhibition is one of the Shire Hall Gallery’s most popular exhibitions attracting over 15,000 visitors each year. The competition is open to artists of any age who were born in Staffordshire or who live, work or study in the county.

The gallery is delighted to announce that this year’s main prize of £1,000 is sponsored by SCHOTT UK Limited. Over 100 artists will get to showcase their work at the exhibition when it opens to the public.

Staffordshire County Councillor, Pat Corfield, Cabinet Member for Culture, Communities, and Customers said: “Staffordshire County Council are proud to support this exciting annual exhibition showcasing talent from all over the county.

“The show is an extremely important event in the gallery’s calendar as it promotes new talent and gives artists of all ages and abilities the opportunity to show off their work to the general public. The exhibition is incredibly popular with both new and established local artists with many succeeding in having work accepted.

“We always look forward to receiving a marvellous array of exhibits including, paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, sculpture, 3D mixed media and film & animation.”

All works must be original and produced within the last three years and should be submitted to the Shire Hall Gallery on Friday 27 and Saturday 28 April, during normal opening hours.

The Gallery will be closed for selection on Monday 30 April with the exhibition opening to the public on Saturday 19 May and will run until Sunday 8 July 2012.

OK. Happy for you to move across if necessary. Although this is as much about the call for entries at the moment as it is the event itself. Cheers. :)

I can't just move it across. Presumably you have checked out the Stafford Events section, and so know that there are more than just simple threads contained therein, and you're not just popping on occasionally to post adverts? ;)

Have indeed checked out the Events page, thank you. Will contribute to that section too in due course.

Don't think you are right about it being who you know rather than what your work looks like Crazy Rat Lady. I used to work at SHG and each year two independent judges chose the works to be included in the exhibition from all those entered. Also there is usually a visitors choice winner as well as those who receive sponsors prizes

The independent judges are often teachers or ex teachers at either Stafford College or Stafford uni art departments.

I think the art that you see in the 'open' exhibition is by people that are already strongly involved in the art scene, it often isn’t unknown artists or genuine locals wanting to display their work.

Only an opinion of course.

Seems a bit harsh. The impression I got from my short time working at the art gallery was that the selection process for the open art was more about getting the right mix of pieces to appeal to everybody and something to fit in every corner than actually about finding real talent. Perhaps it seems like a 'who you know' because the same people enter every year and few people outside of the college art scene seem to even be aware of the competition.

Well lets hope that as its been advertised on the forum a wider range of staffordians will apply and there will be a greater mix of works this year rather than the usual contenders.

Taken from this year's Entry Form, information about the judges:

This year’s exhibition will be selected by Rick Barks, Senior Lecturer in Photography at Staffordshire University, and Wendy Law, Director of Turning Point West Midlands. The decision of the selectors and the awards of the prizes is final. Work will be exhibited at the Gallery’s discretion.
