Strange questions you need the answer for.....

There is no answer in French, but in German it would be fier, for the same reason.

(I see the logic of 23 - if the question was "How many letters does 'the answer to this question' have"?)

What is the longest English word with only one vowel in it? No 'y's or 'w's, a proper vowel and there's only one out of a total of eight letters and it's a perfectly ordinary word - it just doesn't sound that long!

Fait enough, but why four. What has the number of letters in the prose version of a number got to do with a question which essentially asks nothing?

The number four also has four letters in it, its the only number which has the number of letters in the word as well as what it represents.

I still don't see how that answers the question though, but according to google that is the correct answer. Either I'm incredibly thick or the question is bogus. I fear the former.
lol @ shoes. You've answered the theory. If the questions answer is a number, and the question is "how many letters does that number have in it", then obviously like you said it has to be the only number which has the number of letters as well as what it represents.

It's a common logic question which just requires the person to think carefully about exactly what the question is asking. I've asked the wife and she said 4 straight away, and she knows 100% that it is four but she can't think why!! lol. :d

How many letters...? Therefore the answer is a number. And the answer will contain a number of letters. The number of letters in the answer must be the same as the number itself. In English it only works with four.

Four is the only number which signifies the same value as the number of letters in the word used to signify it. One has three, two has three, three has five, five has four, six has three and so on, therefore these numbers cannot fulfil both requirements.

The answer cant be one - it has 3 letters
The answer cant be two - it has 3 letters
The answer cant be three - It has 5 letters
The answer cant be five - it has 4 letters

The question doesn't ask nothing - It asks for an answer which you are TOLD has to have the same amount of letters as what it represents. Wish i could think of another way to word it but thats about as descriptive as I can be. ;)

If February is the shortest month, what is the longest month?

There's a clue near the top of this topic, but I don't want you peeking now.

Well feb has the shortest number of DAYS, but there are more than one month with 31 days in them so I'm struggling to narrow it down to one.... hmmm........ (thinking)

Perhaps I should elucidate. I do indeed mean the month with the longest period of time elapsing from when the month starts to when it ends. There are alternative possibilities - such as September being the longest, but May would be the shortest if we meant the length of the word signifying the month in question - hence, why I said that February was the shortest, as a way of avoiding this as a possible answer. However, there is a clear answer to the question that I have asked. As a further clue (or red herring) again the answer may vary in different countries. By that I don't mean that the answer is some obscure thing like Ramadan or some Hebrew or Hindu month - the answer is one of the twelve months from January to December.

I will reveal all.

October

(and I didn't peek)

Im guessing the answer is to do with daylight saving hours then?
October it is. It is an hour longer than any of the other 31 day months. March being an hour shorter. On occasions, such as last year, December is a second longer than the others, but October wins whilst we continue with the lunacy of changing the clocks to pretend that the sun has moved in the sky.

Eight letter word with one vowel? I'm still waiting.

'Worked' and 'myself' in the same sentence?

Anyway, why is it Princess Michael of Kent when her name is Marie?

Actually, forget it. I don't really care.

Ah bollocks !

I hate it when these things beat me! Usually I'm dead snappy with these puzzles and that one had me completely stumped for the want of thinking about what form the answer would be in. Ah well at least I know now and I shall apply what I have learned in future - thanks for the explanations wayne and gramaisc.

BTW what does gramaisc mean?
