Talk to me about Braces!

Hello All!!

After many years of thinking about it - I can finally afford to have braces fitted (thanks Student Finance!)

So I have a million (non medial) questions!!

Do they ache? Will I ever be able to eat again in public? Will I *ahem* still be able to have the occasional snog?

Also I start my teaching in September - do you think it will affect me professionally?

Would it effect my job opportunities?

All advice appreciated!

I had one fitted at age 12/13, I had a couple of teeth removed to create space to pull the other front teeth back. I had a plate with wires, it interfered with speech for a bit whilst adjusting. It was tightened once a month and I don't remember it bothering me too much, the first day after adjustment was when my teeth were most sensitive. :teef:

Eldest son had extractions & a brace when he was 12/13 too, his speech was odd for a few days after it was fitted, but apart from pain/aching on the days they were tightened he had no problems..I'm fairly sure he had a girlfriend at the time to, so lots of snogging would of been going on :) I think there's only a problem when 2 people with braces are snogging each other! ..

...smallest child has recently been told that she will need extractions & a brace in the future & she's really scared - so I expect a blow by blow account of how it goes!

She had a train track braces which was a really lengthy possess to fit but after that first part it was only the tightening up that caused an ache for a few days. But she really moaned about it and made the best of feeling sorry for herself. We tease her about it now every time we look at photos of her.

My son had it done as an adult - train track braces again - he had really strange teeth they crossed over at the front I was amazed that they were able to sort them out. But they look normal now.

So worth having it done and good look

Yes. It may alter the name that the kids use for you when you're not there.

There's a lot of kids with braces and tbh I find them to be quite accepting of them they also come in different colours With gems on, I think it's something they see as normal, I'd probably go for the neutral look though rather than risk turning up with the same colour as little johnny

I had nine teeth removed then had the braces with the plate top for about a hear , hated it ! Coudn't talk properly and it rubbed a bit . Then I had the train track top and bottom for about a year and half . Ached quite alot and I couldn't really eat for first couple of days after fitting / tightening . My mouth used to be covered in ulcers from the rubbing too. Dentist used to give mw this wax stuff to put on the sharp metal rings that go around your back teeth . It never stuck properly though. They have probably made a better one now though. Its definatly worth having done !I used to have two rows of teeth and they were all over the place. My teeth are pretty much straight now. They did move abit out of place when my wisdom teeth came in though.
I always remember sandwiches being the worst thing to eat . Used to get stuck all over braces!
And don't drink red wine /coffee etc because you'll be left with white patches after you have train tracks Removed lol
I think it all depends on how well the dentists fits them and how tight dentist tightens them and the pain scale .
I was never treated any diffently and most people never even noticed my braces

Same as my experience if you can go for invisible braces if not make sure to ask for wax to prevent ulcers sounds weird but comes in strips but you use it too cover the parts of the brace that rubs

I'm going to assume that comment was a compliment Mr Marwood?

Thankyou all for your fab advice - it's definitely something I'm going to do!

After a consultation with my dentist she advised that I would need a brace top and bottom.

I was only expecting to have a brace on my bottom teeth - as these are the wonky ones - and I thought it wouldn't be quite as obvious.

However the prospect of having a full face of brace has rather put me off for now -

I want to throw myself into my teaching and don't want to have anything that would put me at a disadvantage!

Plus typically it cost twice as much (£2000 !!!!)

Thankyou all so much for your time and advice (sorry it's taken me so long to reply!!) xxx

Have you look into the invisible braces (clear) . They probably cost alot more, maybe worth looking into for the future x

Thankyou Alee - that's what I was getting - they are clear but not completely invisible lol (that would be awesome!)

Plus with teaching hours I wouldn't really have the time for the appointments at the dentist to adjust/ clean etc every few weeks

I really want it done but just feel it's not the right time

Kids can be so cruel and I don't want to give them (another) excuse lol! x

@That-Crazy-Rat-Lady kids can be so cruel and I don't want to give them (another) excuse lol! x

To be honest it's not the kids I find cruel it's the people I meet who have a go about teachers having holidays,
(Believe me it happens loads) be prepared to defend your profession especially if there is a snow day! Luckily I have a second job and to people I meet for the first time it's my profession, saves any possible fall outs!

Oh dear @Floss67 x

To be fair I'm quite thick skinned - if people started giving me slack about holidays - I'd go tell them where to stick it!

I get an inordinate amount of holidays with the job I'm at now (so much I've actually struggled to use it...) and haven't had any mumbles (apart from the other half) yet!

Apparently it's well cool to have braces at the local high school, all the kids want train tracks.....honest. My daughter has beautiful straight teeth now after having hers. Not a single negative comment was ever made to her when the brace was on.

To be honest I just get bored with the same old comments so it's easier not to mention it, occasionally I have bitten back and have suggested if they are so interested in the holidays why don't they do the job, or I gloat and say yes it's great having the summer off ( although I've never managed to have the whole summer off, too much to do for September ) but each year I say I'm going to try, so if you ever manage it any ideas gratefully received please.
