I love the atmosphere of the place, excellent service and friendly, and I love the concept, it seems mixed up but it really works, I do think though that the concept could be more fully realised.
The range of ales is good, if but a bit dominated by the Marston's range from time to time, and they are usually in top condition, could do with a bit more variation of style though, a few more stouts and dark beers, oh! and Ringwood beers they're owned by Marston's and excellent beers, the Porter is great. A more exiting range of foreign beers and keg beers would be good as well, there is a growing interest in British craft lagers and draught American craft beers, and a strong Belgium draught beer would go down nicely as well. The beer festivals are a great idea, I hope they continue.
The pies are excellent, proper pies not those 90s style stews with a puff lid, and I love the tin plates, excellent!
I think the deli side of things could be a bit more out there. Where is your charcuterie from? is it local or is it imported? what cheeses are on your cheese board? People like to know this stuff these days, where things come from, is it local? is it genuine? is it artisanal? is it the best and why? etc etc, and if you don't tell them they may think you have something to hide.
No crisps! this is the one thing that I think lets the place down, it seems a curmudgeonly attitude to take toward drinking customers. Ok! crisp packets make the place look messy, then serve them in bowls, sell some peanuts as well, stick a few olives out there, a few cornichons, charge a couple of quid, maybe some cold tapas. If I work up an appetite I might buy a deli platter, I may realise it works out better value for money but I am not going to buy food because they don't sell crisps or not buy a meal because they do, it doesn't make sense.
On the whole though a great place to relax and have a drink or a bite to eat but please get in some bar snacks, Olives et Al do a great range of upmarket bar snacks that sell in posh London pubs and bars, the Harissa Almonds are great.
The sausage menue looks great.
