We deserted the social maelstrom that is Eccleshall last night to visit the big city and The Post House using the Travelzoo voucher. So, all scrubbed up we arrived about 5 mins before we were booked in for. Nice friendly welcome from the young lady behind the bar who assured us we had plenty of time for a drink and a wander around and likewise the young chappy who seemed to be supervising tables in the restaurant.
Good pint of EPA and a reasonably priced orange juice whilst we had a tour of the various bars.
Thought I’d check out the steak situation that as previously documented on here and was told no steaks when using vouchers, I pointed out that the voucher was issued by The Post House and that the menu only mentioned voucher or promotional restrictions on the chateaubriand. Second young chap said he’d check with his boss and returned 5 mins later to inform us that it was “company policy” not to offer steaks in promotions. I was tempted to go down the route of whether it was company policy to mislead customers when offering promotions but Mrs Trumpet was giving me sideways glances and after all we were looking for a pleasant evening out, not an argument.
Had a nice table by a window overlooking the street and our waitress, a petite young blonde lady, was properly ‘on the ball’. Chatty without being intrusive and was able to re-assure Mrs T that the chicken dish on offer was boneless and was a form of chicken “tube”.
Scallops for starter were lovely as was Mrs T’s goat’s cheese tart. My lamb main was cooked to perfection and was a generous portion, perhaps some recompense for the steak situation. The chicken was, as described, wrapped in ham and poached, very nice it looked too as confirmed by its rapid disappearing act. Sides were a bit steep, French beans at £3.00 worked out at about 15 pence each, the new potatoes also at £3.00 at about 60 pence each but they were very nice beans and potatoes.
House wine was OK, thought the proper wines were expensive, £90.00 for Brunello (we didn’t by the way!) which we would normally expect to pay about £50.00 for at a decent Italian restaurant. About £38.00 in wine shops when you can find it.
Overall thought the place was really nice and the food was spot on, would happily pay full whack for what we had. We often travel to eat decent food which involves hotels, fuel etc so really it would work out cheaper for us to eat here on the odd occasion
Will definitely be returning.
