Most boards don't use these now, they create cliques and they discourage a range of opinions. I have disagreed with someone and had points taken off me.

don't worry, they're fairly meaningless. i've had points taken off me before and i have no idea why. they're not being used in the newer forum anyways, which admin will happily tell you when it is

There are many threads regarding this which all echo dangerousdave's points - they don't mean much and will be gone in the upgrade

If you start contributing positively to the forums and getting involved rather than pissing and moaning about the inconsequential stafford points system, which, as pointed out above, has been covered in many threads and literally amount to **** all then you may find your karma improving.

I can't see a problem with getting likes, just not dislikes? This allows people to show appreciation for something, without the ability to vote someone down for voicing their opinion.

I got voted down and not a clue why. :< Feel a little more like a part of the community and a little less of a n00b with a couple of points though!

again i agree, if someone helps out then why not at least have a thanks button, xda developers has used that for a while and as a developer it shows your worth

We only allow positive voting on a forum I administrate, negative voting creates a (surprise surprise) negative environment. Although as this forum is specific to a physical area it doesn't share a lot of the online community problems caused by anonymity, it's still generally a bad idea to allow for negative voting, see: Facebook.

I have posted about a few things actually, it's like the dark ages here, tow the party line and your ok but dare to question it and your made to look unpopular.

    Don't worry I just karma'd him.

I agree with the OP. I once rang up the council to find out about some traffic measures as a number of folks had mentioned on the forum, thinking I had done a good deed. When I posted the information I then lost points!

You can say as much as you like "they are only points" etc etc, however the sooner they are gone the better.

Be good to have a "thanks" system but we don't need the negatives.

<prepares to see his points plummet, they were on 11 when I wrote this :)>

Yes sometimes you feel there is a concensus view held on here but it goes without saying if you put your head out of the trench expect someone to shoot at it.
I hold the view that we can disagree with each other without falling out with each other.

It really dont bother me one jot lol - dont think ive ever got above 3ish point since joining but there again my life dont revolve around points . I dont think its down to saying good or bad......its just what side of the bed they got out on that particular day! If you check around the members some people join, post a couple of random things (nothing bad and not moaning) and wham they end up with -2 or -3 points.

    Strange ........but true haha

Do people really take it that seriously?!?!

If it wasn't for the constant threads about them then I wouldn't ever remember they are there...
