Union Jack = Racist?

Surfing the Internet last night, it became apparent that there are a lot more Staffords around the world than our beloved borough. One in Texas seems to be particulary prevalent, and renders a lot of results from Google.

To avoid confusion, I stuck a Union Jack in the forum header, which I'm sure by now all of you have noticed. Then a terrible thing happened - I started to worry that people would see it as an overtly nationalist symbol, with undertones of racism and thuggery :/

Did this thought, no matter how fleeting, enter into anyone else's mind when you saw the flag flying atop The Forum? Has our national flag, a once great symbol of the British Empire, become synonymous with far-right groups, to the point where little folk like me are scared to sport it on their website?

Discuss :)

Another little correction here (but i may be wrong) but i was brought up that it should be called the Union Flag, it should only be called the Union Jack when flown on a naval vessel.

I understand where you're coming from Admin. In these times of Political correctness, we have to be politically paranoid!

Talking of "various Staffords" though, I once went after an old CRT monitor advertised through Stafford Freecycle group, and was chuffed to be told I was welcome to collect it. When I asked for the address I was told "642 Fourth Street, just after Greenwells store" or something along those lines. I used to drive Taxi's for 5 years so thought "where the bloody hell is that?!?"

Yup... turned out the guy was from Stafford, TX. He'd even taken offers of various items from our Freecycle group, but when he didn't recognise any addresses he made excuses not to collect. When I informed him of the error he thought I was winding him up!! lol

Anyway... (end derail - sorry), yup FLY OUR FLAG WITH PRIDE!! There's plenty of British websites displaying it and no reason not to! Think about visiting global websites such as acer / epson etc. What do you have to do to visit their local website.... CLICK ON OUR GREAT UNION JACK!

The Union Jack is a great symbol of the UK, I'd be more worried if if were the St. Georges Flag you'd displayed which ignores our current national makeup.

Yes indeed fly the flag, perhaps a small addition to it to show that it not a symbol of imperialistic jingoism, or racist fervour, may be a smiley in the top r/h corner or perhaps a black gloved clench fist top left, or down near the bottom a pic of our dearly beloved Jade Goody.....

Er, it should be pointed out that my original post is from September 2006 (see the date at the top-left of the post), from shortly after The Forum opened its doors for the very first time! A lot has changed since then, including a redesigned look, and a new logo sans Union Flag. This was removed purely for design purposes, and had nothing to do with any inferred symbolism or negativity :)
