Use of Language on the Forum

Sofa

I'm a Staffooooooordian
I realise I may come across as being a bit nanny state or whatever for saying this, but I feel I have to make this point - I would like to see the Forum free of the kind of language which could could be deemed offensive, especially to minors.

Swearing and expletives are commonly used in conversation and in the right set and setting and that is fine with me. I enjoy Malcom Tucker's colourful use of the Queen's English as much as anyone.

But I am afraid that to many readers that the language used in this Forum can make it seem a bit too much like a conversation from a lad's night out in a bar and discourage contributions from otherwise interested people who would have a lot to contribute. I worry that too many people feel excluded.

I am not advocating suffocating debate - quite the opposite - I believe that keeping a polite tone can prevent discussions from breaking down into flamefests.

Swearing has its place, but, please, just not on the Forum.

I have noticed a bit more of it creeping in here lately myself. I will also confess to having to find out who Malcolm Tucker is - shame on me. I'm a great believer in the euphemism - with just a bit of effort it is possible to be quite offensive without causing offence. I thought we had some sort of automated spell-changer that could intercept these terms.

I tend to use it to emphasie emotions ie SDGH fiasco or maybe rants such as shopping, however i also use it in a bawdy jocular fashion and of course my new found love of poetry even Bill Shakey was found of a thruck thruck and thrice thruck.....

Interesting topic for a thread, Sofa, thanks for posting. :)

I would be very interested to hear everyone's opinion on this, particularly those who may lurk in the background and not post as much as others!

I've never known one poster use the word "wank" and its derivatives as much as you, basil! I would go so far as to say that you are one of the more prominent curse-word users on The Forum.

That's not a criticism, incidentally. There are no hard and fast rules, at present, regarding swearing round here, so you're not doing anything wrong. I was just bringing to your attention that perhaps you don't realise how much you do it! ;)

Happy ending? :strange:

What is the swear filter like on this forum Admin? Is it a standard word replacement? Could always replace most swear words with their more eloquent derivitives, but you can't catch them all. Unlike Pokemon. Or STIs.

There is some changing going on - as shown here - searching for the original will bring up this post with the 'offending' word altered to 'chuff', and yet the search function will still find it.

Most of my 'profound' language is well within context and also used in;
1, Hilarious word association,
2, Entertaiment, ie my hilarioius poetry
3,Describing others choice of music
4, Threads of a sexual nature
5, Mr Shoes and his 'Knuckle Shuffle' behaiviour,

If i have offended then i will desist from profanities forefwith however if others throw down the gauntlett i will rise to the bait................

I'm all for now it's popular making a 'diet coke' version of the forum.
The reason it is so busy and there is so many opposing view points is because there is FREE SPEECH. I don't agree with 1/2 the people here but it would be a bore if everyone said the same thing. You have farking word replace function, big bother already has a hand in.

If the language really does stop some people joining in the debate then I'm sorry; but that is not the issue.

I would love every man and his dog to contribute to this place and as far as I'm concerned you silly billys can says what ever you like.

Exactly. Posts are always recorded in the database exactly as the user intended. The word filter processes posts as they are viewed, thus filtering content to the reader but preserving the original post. Hence, you can still search for censored words and they will be found, which is deliberate by design. :)

I used to use the word filter for other reasons (such as changing the shockingly common "should of" to the obviously correct "should have") but I've since put an end to that. For now, at least. ;)

Actually, scratch that, I've just added one for the benefit of MyCult. ;)

Just make sure by imposing this you don't take the fun out of the place. I personally love how inappropriate Basil and other members are. I wouldn't read or post here without the free speech this place has. So take that; you mother loving, puppy hugging, cooperative muddy funsters.

The filters are not hard to get around either by the way. Don't make it a challenge.

I haven't imposed anything (other than the very scant word-filters that have been in place for years, to strip out the really offensive stuff)! This thread is not any kind of official announcement or protocol change; it's just Sofa putting an idea out there. An idea of his own, I hasten to add; nothing to do with me or The Forum!

For the record, I had no prior knowledge that Sofa was going to post this thread, but now he has done so I am interested to hear the responses. :)

I try not to voice my opinion on most matters, choosing instead to remain unbiased. I have to say, however, that I am inclined to agree with you here. That being said, if things got way out of hand, I would not hesitate to pull on the reins a little. For the most part, though, people round here know where the line is, as far as I can tell!

It's not supposed to be a challenge, it's assumed that if you know a filter is in place you would have enough respect for the place and its users not to try and break it.

ok, ok, yes I know the rules and like this place.

I would like this to continue to be a faceless and 'nameless' discourse between not very like minded individuals. Or this will stop being worth putting the effort in. There are many characters on here. They make the place.

All this reminds me of when a friend of mine took his rather straight-laced wife to see Quadrophenia because 'she likes musicals'.

The film was not quite what they expected it to be. "She was not impressed", he said, "The language - the language was farking appalling!"

Got to admit i've not noticed too much swearing on the forum...

I always try to use "shizzle" and "FFS" or "sh*t" instead of the actual words.... is that what the OP is referring to?!?!
