Virgin Media slow internet

That's good news. Last night was shocking again.

Seems virtually impossible to report a fault online without going round in circles with "frequently asked questions" attempting to fob you off. :grr:

First time I rang last night, after ages pressing this that and the other for ages, I was told by an automated message that my modem hadn't been switched off for a long time, so to switch it off for 2 minutes and ring back if the fault was still there. (despite us switching it off for a few days last week when we went away!)
Did that, rang back and after going all through the process again finally managed to spend an hour talking to a guy with a foreign accent who we all had difficulty understanding.

Bit embarrassing this morning after finally spending 20 minutes in a queue to speak to someone. I'd put it on speaker phone while I carried on with my housework and got a bit carried away singing away loudly to the good music being played. I sounded like a wolf howling when the music suddenly stopped, and a voice started talking from somewhere.....completely forgot it was the music on the phone I was listening to !

(And for some reason now my screen has started jumping on each press of a key as I type on this forum. Any suggestions as to why ???? )

my daughter lives on youtube , ive been keeping an eye on the VM forum and it seems youtube seems to suffer a lot from stuttering/buffering on HD vids , how is that for peeps in stafford , any issues ?

Utube has been a pain to use just lately, some won't start at all and throw up "error downloading" I watch a lot of QI on there and never know if the one I click on will start or not!

I noticed the same the other day even though my speeds were well above what i pay for, it seems ok now though.

Well I'm glad it's not just me then. I've also noticed poor performance on Youtube. Virgin Media obviously haven't got the capacity between their network and Youtube's to handle all the traffic

from what ive read , it seems they cashe youtube through their own servers , cant remember the fix but i think it involves blocking thier own cashe address for youtube or using a VPN so VM dont know its one of their addresses accessing youtube.

Caching would usually result in faster and better performance. Although they may well have not sized it appropriately.
I suspect it's a peering issue though

Normally yeah, but if their servers are buckling under the load then you'll get awful performance.

Managed to solve the issue my end by chucking all web traffic via my server in France.. Not exactly the easiest solution in the world though! :)

Not a speed thing, but have Virgin now started blocking VPN stuff? Last week I couldn't VPN in to my home network from my phone, and now I can't VPN out to my friend's business network over in the big old US of A. They both connect fine, but actual traffic won't pass.
