Wednesday Market - Why

So what you saying...at events councils should restrict what type of sellers and stalls there can be?

So what if there is a bit of competition, especially as a one of such as events or outdoor markets.

Of course I would prefer variation but that doesn't happen in small town centres, my god a few months back the guildhall had 3 card shops and another in the market.

People are attracted to a different offers in town centres, even if it is the same thing offered in a different way, more convenient and accessible way.

I have said before the story of the chap I have worked with for the best part of 5 years who didn't think there was a butchers, fruit and veg, fish mongers etc.....if these alternatives drive more people into town centres, they may find things in town they were unaware of and that a good thing.

This can only be a good thing, but it should not stop at just markets, more events are needed to generate interest and visitors that offer more than just retail, food and drink and get rid of those market car sellers and bloody chuggers.

If you don't quote who you are responding to your posts make even less sense than your usual council propaganda.......

As @Really? says, get the market out of its indoor location and into Market Square. A return to the Tuesday, Friday and Saturday market day format as well to make it more of an event. Hopefully both the current indoor and outdoor traders could combine and stretch things out beyond the confines of the square and up towards the northern end of the high street as well to add a bit of footfall to the area.

The other days can have other activities when there is no market on to add variety.

Well if you can read (not sure), it is pretty clear which post I was responding as only one other post had mentioned Lichfield Council. As I was in the process of directly posting to Really`s response but someone posted just before mine. If you can read figure it out, you`re abig boy now ;)

As guess as I spin so much council propaganda, just slagging them off ( in the post I have quoted for you)....guess I won't get my brown envelope this week, ohshucks.

Mmm, I'm not sure if all the current indoor market traders would be keen on having to have outdoor stalls.

Having to remove the stalls (to 'somewhere') at the end of the day might be a little too much bother.

Well if they are serious about wanting to make money then they should probably get off there arses and move where the money is.

Should the opportunity ever arise...

Mmm, an outdoor stall on a day like today may not be an improvement that would see much extra money rolling in.

My brother in law was a market trader for many years and did exactly that, based in Rugeley he travelled to wherever the decent markets were. In the years just before his retirement his weekly run was : Welshpool Mondays, Newtown Tuesdays, Machynlleth Wednesdays, buying in Thursdays Flint Fridays and Nantwich Saturdays. Used to stay in a caravan Monday to Wednesday. And be on his pitch by 07:00 each morning erecting his stall and not leaving site 'til usually 18:00 by the time he was packed away and ready to roll. Bloody hard work but he made a very good living out of it as did many of his friends that he met doing similar runs. I've heard local market traders complaining about high rents and the lack of council support but there are plenty of other markets out there if you can be arsed.

I lived in Oulton many moons ago and the biggest house, the hugest house in the village was owned by a market trader.

We never met him, he was working too hard to interact with village life.

But it just goes to show that hard work, determination and ambition can work results.

As for food market stalls - because Stafford hasn't got it's fair share of food retailers and cafes:rolleyes:.
What it hasn't got is somewhere you can grab something half decent and hot to eat on a half-hour lunch break.

McD's, Greggs(x2), Mr Sizzle and two bap shops currently fight for that market. I'm not sure i'd categorise that as a 'fair share'. Actually, come to think of it, i am sure that i wouldn't.

Agreed, wish I could get a burrito or something like that.

Then they should go for a shop instead of a market stall.

Markets are supposed to be cheaper than shops to reflect the lower overheads and lower rates - hence why they were always outside. Many of the market stalls in the indoor market are no cheaper than the shops they are in competition with and offer very little in the way of service to counteract this (as it's not all about money). Times move on but Markets could actually thrive by going back to their roots - real personalities, great banter and fantastic quality and service from people you can trust. Some indoor markets manage to achieve this but, sadly, Stafford isn't one of them.

I wandered through this today and, as shouty meat man was being particularly quiet for once, I took the opportunity to check his offerings a little more carefully than I usually do.

He had various samples displayed along the front, with catchy alliterative labels -

e.g., Loads of Lamb, Beautiful Beef and the unfortunately titled Piles of Pork - that sounded possibly a bit chewy..?
