What's happening to The Island pub?

the building itself....Gothic Cottage was built in around 1840 and don't know if the other buildings were added on after or whether the King William was built later

I don't know - Darts22 may have something to say, he is the Forum's Pub Correspondent. With that style of lintel over the windows, I wouldn't think that it was too old - mid 1800s, maybe, but, you never know...

The insides will be ripped out, any sort of character that was in place will no doubt have been trashed
When the lads that were initially clearing it let me have a look in, it seemed that the interior was largely derelict anyway.

Some interesting posts, thank the lord for the historic lot of you, i can only vouch for the last few years, Stafford being my adopted town, i only recall the fairly recent, compared to the a-good-few-years-ago brigade.

It pains me to hear what was there; what is there, then again the dreaded; what was there!

Pains me even more to see it happening in all it's dirty glory, as we're seeing here.

I got drunk on rum and blacks in the King Bill, as we called it, in about 1965 , (the beer was terrible and served in a enamel jug she refilled from somewhere back of the bar), we were served by an old lady that kept going back into a room behind the bar to watch TV, bare board seating and a dart board is all I can remember of the decor.
Ahh the good old days, yeh right!

King William was trading in 1834 run by william Tagg

Was this the first use of the building?

I cycled past today and thought it likely to be Georgian - though i suppose building fashion might have taken a bit longer to change in the boondocks.

Presumably licensed under the Beer Act of 1830 and named after the reigning monarch. The Beer Act made it much easier and cheaper to get a licence for premises that only sold beer. May well have been an older building though.

You really do have a bee in your bonnet with regards to their new windows and doors eh? Even if they don't look ideal I'm just pleased that after all these years the building is actually going to get used again - surely that is the most important thing. I wish them every success in their new venture. If it turns out to be a great place then I'll visit regardless of their choice of exterior glazing credibility - I hope others will also do the same.

oh, you're a mutton dressed as lamb type a guy, fair enough FDR, whatever floats your boat.

I don't think you'll become a conservation officer anytime soon, perhaps a seat on Stafford Development Control Committee...!

No I'm more of a "give the place a fair crack of the whip before you totally condemn it" sort of guy, and incidentally before work began to renovate the old place condemning it is all that it was really fit for - or perhaps you prefer the boarded up look?

As for conservation, the building clearly has no building control restrictions on windows and doors in terms of conservation placed upon it and thus they occupants are free to do as they wish - which hopefully is to create a vibrant and thriving business to provide employment and opportunity for our townsfolk - rather than leaving the building to rot - I repeat, I think this is the important factor here.

He has a point, better to be used and look a bit odd than be left to fall apart. Sure I'd prefer someone to do it back up as a traditional boozer, but by now its obvious nobody is willing to put their money where their mouth is and do it. I hate seeing so many places trashed in our town, but looking at all the to let boards in town today I'd rather see places occupied.

Mind you, when the two small shops at the north end of town want between £17k and £23k a year for rent and rates no wonder no bugger moves into them!

So, to compare, you'd have happily seen the Post Office go the same way, instead of wait for the right person to come along, the one with vision and integrity to do things right?

Depends what state the building was in TBH, but I thought the post office was listed anyway? Thats kind of the whole point of listed buildings, people aren't allowed to trash them. How long would you want people to wait for the right person to come along for the island pub, and who should foot the bill for its upkeep until then? Do they get charged rates still, if its derelict?
