Tenuous link I know, but I'd like to buy a very dear friend a bottle of whisky for christmas. I don't drink whisky since I swigged a very large mouthful of Bells when I was 10. Put me off for life :). Anyway, can forumites please recommend a top quality whisky with broad appeal please? I know the recipient like Jack Daniels but not much more about his whisky preferences. I went to the whisky shop at Trentham today; who new there were so many varieties, and what one earth a peaty whisky is I have no idea!! :S. I'm looking to spend around £40 give or take. I like the look of Nikka from the barrel, for no reason other than it had good reviews. Open to any and all recommendations!

Thanks in advance
