Also, if you've got a lot of photos stored this slows the computer so it's worth investing in a separate hard drive and storing them on that.
Really?? I didnt know that, yeh there is photos and music files too

Well, only should slow the computer if there isn't much free space left so it would depend on that Mrs B. Basically when files are opened, modified etc etc., windows has to "play around" with your hard drive and move things about. Therefore you shouldn't physically FILL the hard drive. I usually recommend trying to keep a third of the hard drive free (ideally) or 25% minimum.

Also, if you have lots of photo's etc., are they backed up onto an external hard drive or discs? Remember hard drives break down and IT HURTS to lose data like this. Best solution is to have a big enough hard drive to keep everytthing on your PC, and also an external hard drive with a copy of them on it too. That way, whichever breaks first doesn't matter as you'll still have those files on the other.

One recent customer lost around 20 years of photographs, home video - weddings, births etc etc.... despite me warning him to start backing it up a year beforehand!!

I have recently (well a year ago) ditched AVG after many years of using and recommending it.

I now use Avast and I think its a lot better...

The reason I switched was my PC was having problems and it was a virus that AVG kept seeing but then wouldn't do anything about it. Worrying it got on there in the first place without being spotted.

Avast sorted the problem quickly and is a lot more user friendly / customisable / light running than AVG IMO.
interesting.. i use AVG, and recommend it to everyone, but tbh i've never had a virus in my life so i have never had cause to actually test its virus-protecting capability! one just assumes that if a virus-checker sits in the background and isn't intrusive, it must be ok.. i never thought about the fact that it might not, y'know, protect against viruses lol..

i might have a look at avast next time i do a reinstall.. avira antivir seems lightweight as well, and comes reasonably well recommended, but again i have no idea if it is actually any good at the job it is intended for!

I use AVG on my desktop and ClamWin on everything else. So far been clean for 12 years, and that virus wasn't a problem, cos I wrote it and knew exactly what it was doing.
By the way, whatever happened to Dr Solomon?

They disappeared years and years ago. I did my work experience with them - have to say they were an alright bunch, although would never get my PC repaired there though - people like WMR and Gdavies who have no real overheads always come in with the most competitive prices.

avast is just nice cause it speaks to you when its updated lol

it was my first great impression on linux in the days of windows 95, i had a version of linux knoppix if i remember right which started up and as a default you had a woman with a nice voice say, "start up sequence initiated" which back then was cool as you got that as default and didn't have to tinker to be a geek, lol but you were a geek cause you installed it lol

I like avast as it hasnt become bloatware. AVG used to be good, but then it turned into the same as all the other major security systems, requiring huge ammounts of resources to run.

Avast just sits there in the background quitely working. Looking at task manager now, its only using 45mb of RAM.

tbf if i had created avg i would want to seek other companies to fund the time i spent on making something that is free to the vast amount of people, but i know a few people who have paid for it and yet it remains as though it is becoming bloatey so it seems to me they must just release a general one for paid and unpaid customers

My ex business partner does rave about the new AVG that has just been released. He says its great for business' if you need to control AV centrally.
