NEW government guidelines on the consumption of red and processed meat made the headlines recently, with their advice that we should eat no more than 70 grams a day. But how much, the papers all wanted to know, was 70 grams?
The Department of Health helpfully published a list and it was widely circulated. It mentioned several meaty items alongside their respective weights, including a cooked breakfast and a Sunday roast, but only two distinct brands – a Big Mac and a Peperami. It just so happens that the two branded items were the only ones on the list that came in at 70g or under, making them “safe”.
Last November the health secretary Andrew Lansley set up five “responsibility deal” networks with business to come up with health policies. These were widely criticised at the time as being akin to letting Big Tobacco draft smoking policy. Two of the companies Lansley got into bed with were McDonald’s and Unilever, who happen to be the purveyors of Big Macs and Peperamis respectively. Could the inclusion of their two products in the safe red meat guidelines be a first example of the “responsibility deal” in action?
