I used to Want to get a T-shirt with "Thatcher? Never Forgotten, Never Forgiven", but then the Labour party, did the dirty on Unions, and we ended up with Blair & Brown!!!!

Pretty much what I feel, she screwed a lot of people over but now our 'saviors' have simply screwed over anyone left. Apart from wealthy businessmen who donate to the party, and themselves.

We need a none of the above box on all ballots, if that wins all candidates must step down and be replaced. Maybe then we could vote in the people we trusted, not just the parties.

Labour or Tory, the acquisition of money is lauded above all. I agree with Tek, but how would we ensure that replacements are any better? Power corrupts blah blah blah.

Maybe if they knew how easy it is to remove them they'd try harder? Lets face it, the current lot have commited blatant fraud yet think parlimentary privilige means they should be let off. They have no respect for their bosses - us. They are supposed to do what we want, not shaft us while laughing from their mansions. Politics lost its way a long time ago, shame cos democracy is a nice idea on paper. Can't help feeling all we get nowadays are bitesize dictatorships, we only get any form of control every 4 years and even then the choices are limited.

It's been said before the kind of people who want to run the country are not the type of people we need to run the country.

Its catch 22.

I'm sure it was an Asimov novel I read once where the leaders are chosen by their peers from academia and business, only allowed to run for one term and got no monetary benefit from doing it. Doubt it'd work though.

Don't see why not.

One of the Foundation novels? Been years since I read them, I remember there were the two Foundations built on different and opposing structures - but they were more to do with religion. Sounds more like Ursula le Guin or someone like that.

We need a reform of the voting system to proportional representation of some form. At the moment first past the post allows a government to get elected with a majority of seats despite polling a minority of the vote. Last election Labour were elected with 30%ish of the vote.

Wholly agree.

If a PR system had been introduced in 1979 instead of a Tory (spit) government, this country would be very different today and much better for it, for everybody, not just the wealthy.

I did start a thread on this very topic.
