1) Is the Cannock Road towards town supposed to be two lanes, it's not marked as such?
Well, looking at the Street View, the two lanes appear not to start until after your junction, but it's one of those situations where people try and skip the queue into town to turn right. When I used to travel towards Cannock every day, I often used to see one driver who would skip a considerable queue, make a complete circuit of the roundabout then rejoin the queue into town...
2) Would a solution be to cross hatch the junction to prevent people entering the junction?
I think they tend to paint 'keep clear' on the road, although I'm not entirely sure what regulation decides between a yellow box and a 'keep clear' - it would certainly seem like the right sort of junction to do this for, especially at peak times.
3) Shouldn't something be done to assist drivers entering the estate from Stafford town centre?
I would have thought that either a yellow box or 'keep clear' would help, if the traffic is queuing. A lane specifically to turn right would help of course, but would probably irritate those wanting to head to Baswich when the A34 is queuing into town!

Wasn't there a 'right turn' lane there that appeared and then vanished with such startling rapidity that i have to ask whether it actually happened?

A year or so ago?

Wasn't there an unofficial remarking of this junction last year by the white line chaps, but they were made to come back and re-line it as it is now?..

Edit:- Thinking like Withnail - but slower. Time for bed...

Yeah I mention lights, because of the number of minutes you spend trying to turn right out of the estate at 5-6 every night isn't the best ;)

A road about would be best in my view, or bring back the filter lane for gods sake!
As you have to give way to the right, how well would a roundabout work for say turning out of Wildwood with all the traffic pouring in from Cannock to the right?

What is so beloved about this filter lane?! There are millions of other left turns off main roads that cope well without them. Nobody has actually made the case for its necessity.

Sorry how is doing this making the road better? There's no benefits I can see, and all the traffic on an A road now has to slow right down for turning cars. Great for an already congested junction which needs traffic lights/a roundabout.
The benefit I can see is that traffic turning right into the estate isn't crossing what could be potentially two lanes of traffic (the "slip road" and the main road flow).

If cars have to slow down a little bit behind left turning vehicles it is no different to any other left turn off a main road and I suspect makes sod all difference to journey times. Especially in the rush half hour - is there really a desperate hurry to join the back of the queue down Radford Bank?

Surely you can’t maintain that, on the one hand, ‘it has been that way for ever ≠ it works perfectly well’, yet state that on the other ‘There are millions of other left turns off main roads without them = they are not needed’ This is a logical inconsistency one would’ve thought you would find abhorrent.

Absense of evidence ≠ evidence of absence.

If you really wanted to make it easier to turn right then you'd drop the speed limit to 30MPH (why is it 40? it's a built up area) and add more cameras to ensure people stick to the limit.

Please don't give them ideas.... I too am surprised its 40 through there but I think it feels ok at 40 and surely there hasn't been any accidents relating to the speed or else it would have dropped a long time ago.

Cue Henrys Cat argument that it should be 20mph with 100 sets of traffic lights :(

BREAKING NEWS: Operatives are back at the junction as I type. Not removing lines BUT adding them to the "out slip".

When questioned they tell me it is due to near misses, he also then added "it's daft really".

Just come back from a lovely walk to the butchers in Post Office Lane.

They have now chevroned the exit slip road and made it a "proper" junction now.

Not quite sure what this is going to achieve, we shall wait and see.

Surely this doesn't count as 'end of year using up the budget' considering it's now 11th April?
