@bbw if you've had windows running a good time without a clearout it may be slow on bootup too.
You can get it to start quicker by hitting Start, then type run. In the box that appears type msconfig and a box will appear, click the Startup tab and it shows all the applications that run when your computer starts up. untick the ones that are unnecessary or click "disable all", but keep things like antivirus going.

Interesting - read something about that the other day but was a bit skeptical. Bit of a change from the norm for Microsoft, but so far Windows 10 is looking half decent so may well take them up on that offer

The thought of using Windows (any version) on a regular basis brings me out in a cold sweat. I really don't know how people put up with it.
There was a time when I would have agreed with you, but frankly, since windows 7 was released, mac has become somewhat redundant in my opinion. I honestly cannot remember the last time windows crashed.

It's not about crashing.

I have had to help my Mum with her new Windows 8 laptop yesterday. What a complete pain in the backside. Just trying to find the contacts application was hard enough.

It's a hateful OS, designed for a touch interface but bodged to work with a mouse. Horrible.

But Windows 10 brings the mouse useability back into sense aswell as being for touchscreen. I personally think a lot of Mac people are slowly merging over to Windows. In the last couple of years, I've known several devoted Mac users (people that have said they'd never touch a Windows PC) to get... a Windows laptop! Partly due to the costs, but many of them are starting to realise the sheer volume of programs that are available to Windows users..

@bigbluewolf just download and install "Classic Start" for your mum. It will instantly behave more like Windows 7 if you do.

Thanks. I'll take a look at Classic Start for her.

As for Mac users migrating to Windows - I know precisely zero people who have ever done that.

True, but unless you know a considerable amount of people your comment regarding people migrating from apple to windows is of no relevance whatsoever.

Surely anyone's comments about anything have absolutely no relevance to anything whatsoever then?

In the end we are all irrelevant.
