BBC - is that just an excuse to write PEE and kunt in the same post? And surely Andreas' chicken was more likely to be piquant than the bite that he took of it?

Yours semantically,
Mr A. Pedant

i hardly think correctly defining a word, in a thread about the definition of words, is pedantic :teef:

- strict or exact in the observance of the formalities or amenities of conduct or actions.

Cromulant

(crom-you-lənt)

1. (adj.) Being well-formed; legitimate; of a word, especially a neologism, that is not previously
attested in the language but obeys its rules of word-formation.

In itself a neologism, and damn fine word.

I'm fond of litotes, more for the definition than the word itself

Litotes - affirmation by negation of the contrary. (ie not bad = good)

A chap I worked with had a habit of coming up with words that weren't right, but weren't wholly wrong, either. Mexican headed bolts - he had a car with declining seats - and he once claimed that he was going to do something 'disregardlessly' - we never really knew what he meant by that.

Another one, with no sense humour, once complained about an assembly arrangement that we had with a factory in the USA - "These Americans - they're just a bunch of cowboys!" When it was pointed out to him that some of them might be Indians, he took that to mean that they were using cheap immigrant labour - how we laughed...

I once used the word 'gravitas' to Colossal, whilst we were wandering home from the Grapes at 2am, in reference to the Derek Holt performance that we had just witnessed. He was previously unaware of this word and has now adopted it as his own.
