Is anything being done in Stafford tomorrow to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the start of WWI?

http://www.staffordshiregreatwar.com/events/

found 4 pages of events but nothing special happening today apart from a Candlelight service at the Arboretum.

I have heard nothing about any town centre events but i will be taking part in the Lights Out tonight.

Shameless plug (as im a volunteer there) but the Staffordshire Regiment Museum is a good place to visit....

I watched the service on bbc 2 last night and thought it was very well done. We must never forget.

I had a candle lit in the window of the street I live on......couldn't see any other home lights on, so I hope others took part.

A simple gesture to honour those to fought.

I had a look this morning into purchasing a Ceramic Red Poppy in the art installation and The Tower of London but Im going to freely admit that i think im being a little bit thick, but i cant quite seem to get my head around the following:

Each ceramic poppy will be available to buy for £25 (+p&p) from 5 August 2014. 10% from each poppy, plus all nHand made in Paul Cummins' studio, poppies are available for £25.00 +p&p. 10% from each poppy, plus all net proceeds, will be shared equally amongst six service charities. et proceeds, which we hope will be millions of pounds if all poppies are sold, will be shared equally amongst six service charities. - See more at:

Can someone tell me in plain english or even better, work it out in £'s how much the 6 charities would actually be getting? As to me it doesnt seem like a lot....

Hopefully my great uncles name will one day be on that memorial. He was a soldier in the Great War and is buried at the church in baswich (can't remember the name). He is one of two soldiers with the distinctive headstone. However his name does not appear on any local memorial despite living in Brocton.

Anyone in town for the two minutes silence? I walked through town at about 10:15 and saw a crown gathering around a podium and Union Jack placed in the centre. I figured I'd come back about 10:50 and someone would be delivering a speech before the 2 minutes silence. I came back later and there was quite a large crowd but the podium was completely empty. 10:59 came and nobody had turned up so I figured I'd keep an eye on the time myself.

11:00:00 came, and I started to observe the 2 minutes silence but many people around me were clearly waiting for some kind of signal as they carried on chatting for a full 30 seconds before people started being quiet. After that the 2 minutes silence went on for at least 3 minutes, probably again people were waiting for a signal. Eventually someone in the crowd started clapping which people joined in with.

I'm not really sure what the purpose of the stand in the centre was for if it wasn't to be used around the time of the 2 minutes silence. Clearly all the people that came to the town centre thought something had been organised.

Something was organised!! It appears there was a monumental stuff up.... The council advertise a service in the market Square and then don't do anything !!

According to a reply to a tweet by Stafford Council the service was actually by the magistrates court.

A friend of mine also went to Market Sq and wondered why nothing was happening.
She got talking to someone from the armed forces and it appears that he also wondered why he was there on his own.

Anyway she rushed back to Bednall but unfortunately not in time to make it to church for our very moving service.
She did join everyone with the walk up to the war memorial, (which the villagers made themselves a few years ago) for the wreath laying.
